Check Engine Light: What's new in OBDII?

I have a 2004 Acura TL and it just lit the check engine light.
i've looked on Amazon and seen the various reviews of various Bluetooth or Wi-Fi based OBDII reader's and the various cables they might or might not need. Does anybody have a good recommendation on what kind of hardware I should get? Do I need the Honda specific ones that I can get the codes needed to fully diagnose the issue or will the generic ones work?
What is your favorite reader for iOS or Android? Please post links.. Thanks for any advice!

I bought the BAFX one recommended by a few on here, I haven't had to use it for check engine light yet but it works well. I downloaded Torque Pro from Google Play $5 has more features than free version.

Also have the PLX Kiwi2 .. they have an iOS version.. Their Android version works just as well as the BAFX.

I've bought something like this in 2014. It connects easly with TorquePro on all my phones. It reads dtcs, let you clear it and gives a lot of readings. So if you are willing to wait for such toy for a month, you can get it for ~2$ shipped
Amazon, ebay etc. - almost all elm327s come from China, only price is the difference.
