Chatter at Idle

I dont know if its normal or not, but I dont think it is. When my car is at running temp. and is just sitting still idling there is a slight chatter and it seems like its coming from the front passanger side wheel well. Chatter is the best I can discribe it, its not constant its like a pulse of six, over and over. Car runs great and I cant feel anything different. Anyhelp?

I have been experiencing something similar as well. I had the dealership check all the mounts - I told them I was feeling a rough idle. They supposedly checked the mounts and said everything is fine, but it still idles rough and the problem persists.

I'm going to probably take it back yet again to have them look at it, because it's certainly not normal. My father has a '99 3.2 TL and with 140,000 miles, it's much smoother than my '08 which has 11,400 miles. Go figure.

Heat shield? There were some TSBs for adjusting the exhaust heat shields.

If the rough idle only occurs on cold starts, it's the ULEV system of the '08 and is normal; it helps warm up the engine and minimize emissions more quickly.

Hi guys i have an 07 TLS and it does it too...I believe its the tensioner on the main belt which is on the passenger side. It's annoying but doesn't change anything regarding performance. Next time you bring it in have them look at it...

I was actually trying to research something very similar. I can hear and feel a mechanical tapping/vibration in my brake pedal when the car is in drive at a stop light. I have a 2005 TL automatic. If I put the car in neutral the tapping goes away.

It doesn't happen all the time. I took it to the mechanic yesterday and, naturally, they couldn't get the car to do it.

I think I have the same noise. However, it rarely happens on idle, it's more when I am running through pot holes or rough surfaces.

It's in the 3G Garage link to TSBs:

I notice the chatter whenever I'm at a light and I don't have my music turned up. I had the dealer check it again for a 2nd time three days ago and they say it's normal - everything is fine. I still don't buy it.

It's not there in Park, Neutral, or in motion.

Morgrar, my 08 TL has a similar pulsing 'Chirp' issue coming from the lower timing belt area at idle. The dealership is scheduled to perform TSB-08-031 next week. The procedure will install a tapered shim to align an idler pulley that is causing the timing belt to rub against the side of the drive pulley making the noise. They also replace your timing belt and drive pulley as part of the corrective action.

The TSB document has an embedded video clip with the sound so you can compare it to your issue:

It is normal for the valves to chatter with V-tec engines.

Had it at the dealership and they ordered parts to fix it. Some kind of shim on the timing belt is bad.

Thanks for the link and the TSB, but unfortunately, mine doesn't make a "chirp" sound as seen in the video clip.
