A/C compressor relay

hey guys im having some trouble with me A/C and eveyone is telling me its my compressor relay. i dont know if it is or not since i dont know anything about them. well anyway what my A/C is doing is sometimes it will kick on and sometimes it wont, sometimes it will get cold and sometimes it wont, and when it is running its constantly changing speeds and im not touching the controls then after a little bit it will shut off. people are saying it may be my relay so i figured i would spend the 8 bucks and replace it but my problem is i cant find the relay for it!! i feel like an idiot since i cant find it and ive looked in the owners maual looking for it and cant find it. is there anyone that can help me out?? thanks

Look at the under hood fuse box diagram in the owner's manual. There are 3 unlabled rectangles (relays oriented vertically on the top row. It's the middle rectangle.

Have the system tested for pressure readings to see if loss of refrigerant might be the problem.

sounds like the transistor is acting up. when you say "changes speed" do you mean like air flow? do this...when you turn the system on watch as you compressor kicks on and watch the fans as well. when the compressor kicks on the fans should kick on too. at that time the air inside should be cold.

Yea the air flow out the vents change as if I was changing it on the dash but I'm not. Sometimes it all kicks on as soon as I crank the car and sometimes nothig kicks on as if I had turned everything off but I have it all turned on wide open. When it does kick on and run it will run for a little while and everything shuts off to where nothing is coming out the vents once again as if I turned it all off. Then after a while it will kick back on again

hmmm how far are you from Houston. ok how well does the Heat/heater work. find a buddy and and move the temp all the way hot and all the way cold. as you do this watch the passenger side foot area and look up underneath and watch the little moving motor/air flow door and see what its doing. it should be moving back and forth. test the circulate mode too..theres a motor for that too. if you can find a buddy thats got one and swap the transistors and see if the problem goes away

I'm about 5-6 hours away from Houston lol. I tried the heater 2 weeks ago to see if that would even work and that didn't work either. When it decides to shut off everything shuts off with it. I'm so clueless on air conditioners Especially in cars

You need to replace the compressor clutch and coil.

Check your blower motor resistor it's probably going bad.

TLdude you can't prove that. that a grand in parts alone. It needs to be checked out by ac shop. and get a second opinion

If you do a search you'll see that a few TL's have had this same exact problem including mine. The compressor itself is good and parts ran me about 230 shipped IIRC so idk where you're seeing those parts for over a grand. To the OP, if you want to be sure take it to a Honda or Acura dealer for a diagnostic. I took mine to a couple indy shops and nobody could find what the problem was. Good Luck

im just wondering how someone can read a list of symptoms and the diagnose without checking it out. Like another guy said before me..I would swap out with a buddy's transistor/resistor and then see if the problem goes away. Its free. Oh yea there is still evacuate/recharge. AC work can be brutally expensive regardless of parts. Labor can kill you. I would hate to have some one spend all this $$ and it still acting up...just saying.

oops nm. I did not realize something. it very well could be a coil/clutch. wouldn't hurt putting a new pully on too.

Not sure I follow your post, but I recently posted this regarding my AC in a different thread -

An old thread I know, but have recently run into a similar situation with my 08 TL-S. System would run fine when the engine was cold but after a little bit, it would only blow warm air. So I had a mechanic friend of mine take a look. At first he tried replacing the relay as he says this is a common failure point. Replaced and made no difference. Voltage on relay terminals was normal / at spec. He then jumped the terminals and still no click coming from the compressor clutch. The stator is not operating when it is hot. With the engine cold the following day he checked the stator. Resistance was 4.3 ohms - top of the range for resistance spec of 3.9 -4.3 ohms. He started the car and turned on the AC - it worked fine. He let run for 10 mins and it stopped working. He checked the stator resistance while hot - infinite resistance. Compressor clutch set and stator need to be replaced. $465 all in for OEM parts and his labor. So thought I would just share in case someone else is having similar issues/symptoms.
