Unhappy Battery dead... Again...

Background: I have a 2005 5AT TL

I don't know if some of you guys recall, but there was a TSB out for premature battery deaths (circa 2004-2005). My battery was replaced in 2007 due to this. Fast forward to today, I had just finished having an awesome dinner with the wifey and was ready to roll on back home when my car wouldn't start. In fact, it wouldn't even crank! Most of the lighting (instrument panel, overhead, etc) still were operational, but they were a bit dimmer.

At first I thought it wasn't the battery (its only 2 years old) since the car wouldn't crank at all. Alas, after the tow guy came around, he was able to jump my car, which meant it was the battery at fault.

Questions:

1. Has any of you had an Acura-replaced battery fail on you? I mean, not the first failure, but the second time...

2. My car is completely stock, so its not like there would be a short (I guess it could develop over time, but I doubt it). That said, is it really possible for a short to be causing this? Or is the more likely reason that even the replaced battery was a total POS?

I'm going to take in my car tomorrow and see what the dealer says. Considering that this is the second time that this has happened (first time the dealer caught the problem before it "struck" -- he said the crank power was too low), I am wondering what sort of solution (besides the obvious) they can offer to ensure that this doesn't happen so prematurely again. 5 years, maybe, but 2? Twice?! C'mon...

i was never a fan of OEM batteries... they really suck... if this happens on my 3G, i will prob just go out and get an aftermarket or deep cycle battery... i have a Optima on my 1G TL for 8 yrs now... not a single hiccup...

You may try having the dealer replace it again. I heard the newer Acura batteries are better. Personally I went with an Optima Yellowtop.

I wanna say I have the YT34/35. It was in my TSX before the TL. But it fit. Here's a good thread:

speak of the damn devil!!!

my TL is at Acura for my problem below.

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/07tl-25k-miles-bad-master-cylinder-720003/

service advisor just called and said my car is done... but when they went to road test it for the brakes, the Airbag light came on... when they tested for the airbag light, it came back Low Voltage so they tested the battery and it failed the load test...

new battery... what is honda doing with their batteries???

yeah...they're absolutely terrible. i had issues with cold cranks mainly before my battery went completely dead; that's what brought it to my attention. got a second battery under warranty from the dealer...also went dead within a few weeks. either they're recycling their batteries, or seriously bad i don't know. i've had my yellow top optima for 3 years now. perfect start every single time...even after sitting for weeks at a time.

Optima Yellow Top

Batteries Plus
1450 Bush Street,
San Francisco 94109-5521
Between VanNess & Polk

415.885.5500

I called and put in a good word with the store owner for ya, he'll give you 10% off the optima yellow top (just turn in your old battery for a core) if you mention Acurazine.

think about it , your radio, hands free, secuirty, srs, radio amp, ecu. these things stay on about 10 -15 mins after you shut off the car. over time , it weakins the battery. but the most common things are the door locks stick and if you get in the car and touch the cover of the map light , between your rear mirror and moon roof switch and see if its warm. your hands free is staying on, killing the battery

I'm along the same line of thinking - something else is at fault in all these cars. I'm on my 3rd battery on my 04, non-navi, first one went out 28 months after I bought the car. The other two batteries were Silver grade from Advance AutoCraft. Last one was replaced under their 2 year warranty (by 13 days!) I never sit with the battery powering radio or lights, and my usual drive is a commute to work of about 20 minutes, so the battery should be getting decent charge each time I use it.

Someone once said that navi systems could drain batteries, but that's not in my case, obviously. I'll have to check the blue tooth module and see if I feel warmth there.

Dayum, I've been having issues with my battery dying on me lately too.. Mine is past the warranty period so I guess I'll just have to replace it. AAA came and gave me a boost and he checked the battery and he said the battery was still good bc the green light is still on on the battery and it might be the alternator.. I hope not!! Even if I don't have the radio on with the car off but the key in the aux position, the car wont turn on after 5-10 min in this position. What do ya think it is? Sorry for hijacking the thread but maybe it's related to the OP issue as well. Thanks.

Problem with Hands Free Link (HFL) ?

There is a service bulletin regarding the hands free link (HFL). I think the bulletin was issued during the fall of 08. It seems that the HFL stays on (even if you don't use it) and has a draw on the battery. After a while and especially if you let your car sit for a day or so, the HFL draw kills the battery.

mine died today! 2008 type S. not even 2 yrs old, 15k miles. why am i afraid tomorrow that they are going to try and say i left something on and that's why it died? thanks to this thread i am confident in my cause and will cite all these problems others had if need be. but dealer has been great so far so i probably need not worry. hopefully.
