Bad Gas - No Pun Intended

I was at the service center to ask a MT some questions and he had a ABP 3G TL in for service. The owner said he had a bad tank of gas (wasn't sure if he meant 89 Octane or contaminated gas).. They opened up the cats and it looked like a grenade went off in them. His engine was a mess.. I didn't verify all the problems but the estimate was getting so high that they were talking about ordering another engine. wtf right?

I've seen a couple of threads about AZ members using 89 Octane with no problems. If this guy did run 89.. what could cause that damage.. high revs?? I run 93 religiously. Any thoughts? water in fuel? sugar? egg?

running 89 wont do that, there was probably something else that leaked in the tank. not sure, i know water can often get in the the tanks, not sure what diesel would do...

If you mistakenly fill up the tank of a non-diesel car with diesel fuel, you have to drain the tank. DO NOT START THE CAR, NOT EVEN FOR A FEW SECONDS. If you can drain the tank without ever starting the engine, there shouldn't be too much damage to the engine, if any at all.

But if you start the car, and diesel fuel is fed into the engine.....well, you'll be either shopping for a new engine, or paying your mechanic a small fortune to rebuild it. The engine will have to be stripped down to nuts and bolts, cleaned, and reassembled. That's not a cheap job at all....

There have been recent stories in the paper-
Gas stations where the tanker driver somehow overlooked all the safeguards and put diesel in the `normal` gas storage tanks- OOOOOPS

It happened at name brand- off brand and even at costco! Imagine how many people got gas there before the manager is told and shuts down the pumps!!
Some cars made it down the street before quitting....others never leave the station.
The company is responsible for all damages-

Pass that on to the guy and the shop manager- to watch for with other cars.
I have seen just crud contaminated gas from 1 station bring a dozen cars into the shop in a day!

Note to anyone storing car for months- add seafoam to engine intake and gas tank-
or stabil-to keep water absorbtion and fuel gumming from occuring and ruining engine

I actually brought my car in for service once and there was a guy there that said some girl put coca-cola in his gas tank...I guess his car was all f'd up so I didn't ask any more ?'s.
Anyway, I put 89 in my car once and my check engine light came on, I took care of it and now I only use premium, never had a problem after that.

That's scary.. I may do a visual and smell test before my next fill-up.. unless the gas station is willing to drop a crate 3.5L..

I had to look this up.. the reasoning is that sugar doesn't dissolve in gasoline but if it were to reach the engine it would do some serious damage.. therefore coca-cola would do the trick.. that's one smart girl!!.. too bad for the car..

89 should not trigger a CEL-
you may need to clean the intake system if over 50k miles on it, general grunge may have it working poorly

i almost put diesel in my jeep, about a year ago. the assholes put the green color handles on the diesel one and the yellow on the gasoline...usually yellow = diesel. green/blue/black = gasoline.
