hmm.. I'll check it out in the service manual and see if there are any clues to the culprit..

isn't the shift lock release used for when you can't get out of park? in any case the manual states..
If you need to use the shift lock
release, it means your vehicle is
developing a problem. Have the
vehicle checked by your dealer.

hmm.. this may take some time to figure out.. but I think this is a controller / electrical issue.. mechanically the clutches disengage as hydraulic pressure is relieved and the pawl bar locks in. If it's a mechanical issue it would be the pawl not being able to engage the park gear..

You're moving the shifter from R - N - D a few times and then it goes into park??

Here are your possible culprits from the Service Manual.. I'd get it checked out if your not inclined to do some digging.

yes - ever heard if your in park and you press on the brake you hear a soft click? well mine is a little louder and thats how i know what it is. you cant take the car out of park until you press on the brake. you also cant put the car into park with out the brake pedal pressed to prevent damage. well i think this safety latch gets stuck sometimes and when i move the shifter around it finally releases. i think it unsticks beause im rattling the area

Since you don't have trouble putting your car in Reverse - I'd put money on your shift cable. It is a fairly simple operation to adjust it.. but far too much to post pics on.

also.. when you say soft click.. what do you mean? shifting is controlled by the PCM.. not sure what safety switch you are talking about. Sometimes if you don't press in your brake all the way.. you can hear the pawl bar being clunked when shifting into P - R or D - P.

This has happened to me a couple of times when i park at a forward downhill slope. i am not able to get out of park. it just gets stuck sometimes. i would press the brakes and would not hear the "CLICK" ( shifter interlock releasing) but i would remove the cover from the shifter bypass thing and stick my key in there. after that i could hear the interlock releasing everytime i press the brakes ( i wouldn't shift either further concluding it was just something getting stuck; it felt like the lock was alittle high everytime i would stick my key in as well).

are you hearing the click when you brake?
