Alternator

i think i have bad alternator. the car is over town and wont start but i just replaced the battery and i heard it whining 2 days ago.

So....

any tips or tricks on replacing it on the side of the rd? like size bolt or anything

do you really need to remove the fan to replace the alternator? i found my shop manual and wants me to remove the fan and reservoir

Never did one, but remove belt, disconnect battery, then assume you'll need to remove the wheel and panels top/under/side of the car, a couple of wires/bolts. Hopefully you'll have the security codes.

just an fyi....
I did have to remove the fan. 2 bolts at the top and 1 at the bottom. I left the reservoir on the fan and just disconnected the rubber hose I saw no way to get the old alternator out without removing the fan just not enough room. Watch for the small connectors on the lower part of the fan shroud so you don't damage them when removing the fan. Once i got the fan out of the way it was just a normal alternator installation.

How many miles did you have when your alternator died ?

I hope he has over 200k cause im at 158k and don't feel like changing an alternator any time soon.


What sucks is once it fails you have minutes before your car just kills the battery and subsequently leaves you stranded

i have 150k miles on it and i actually drove for about 30 min on the battery BUT i have no way of knowing if the alternator was charging any at all during that 30 min.
