ACURA TL 2006 - Possible Transmission Problem - Got Estimate from Meineke - No idea a
Basic Symptoms of my Car
- Engine Light Check
- When I start driving it, it takes a bit for my foot on the gas before it actually accelerates .
- When I drive now when I put my foot on the gas the RPM goes up really high where it used to go up to 40 - 60 in a few seconds now it goes up to 400 RPM really quickly but my MPH goes A LOT slower like it take's a solid 2 - 3 mins to get up to 30 or 40 .
- Engine Check Code P0741 -> Torque Converter / Clutch Solenoid / Circuit Performance / Or Stuck off (Copied from the code reader when they checked it for free)
- Sometimes it would stop then go .
- Engine(?) Makes a whining sound .
What Meineke said
- One guy said I should flush my transmission (I am guilty of not doing that at all since I got it)
- But then the end conclusion was that my transmission was busted (specifically my solenoid)
- They gave me a estimate of 1600$ (700 for solenoid, 800 for 8 hours of labor)
- Both of them at times said I should just sell it and try to get another car .
- 100,000k miles on the car if that matters .
Need some advice as a broke ass college student, is this a jip or can I get it cheaper done local not at a brand ?

The problem is your torque converter is failing/losing hydraulic pressure and has contaminated your internals with friction material.
Youre getting that code not because of the solenoid but due to the pin in the valve body not functioning properly.
What gives it away is the whine you hear which is the torque converter fluid pump about to fail.
As for the slow driving. Again, its the torque converter failing and losing its hydraulic pressure.
I'm going through that same fix now. I'm getting my trans rebuilt and the valve body had a lot of friction material. The valve body bores are covered in it. When your t.c locks a pin in the bore moves but the friction material is restricting its movement.
Sure its not what you want to hear, because I didnt. So get ready to rebuild it or replace it.
700 dollars is for a used transmission? Definitely not for a solenoid.
IF you can find an 03-07 accord v6 transmission, you could swap that in.
In my case, i have 175k miles in my 06. I've done all maintenance on the car so I know its history. Since I only use this as my commuter car and drive less than 4 miles a day.
It made sense to spend 2k on rebuilding it than getting a beater.
Hope this helps with your decision.
