acceleration problems

ok so lately ive noticed that my car has been acting funny

say if im accelerating i put it in first an it goes through the rpm fine

when i get into 2nd and press on the gas it will go through the rpms till about 2000 then jump quickly to the 4000 its hard to explain on the internet but my best example is

u know when ur driving around in the rain an kinda press on the gas and the revs go up but the vsa kicks in so the revs are up but its not giving you the actual power thats kinda what its doing but its not the vsa

any1 have any ideas

6 speed-I'd say the only way the rpm's are going to jump, as long as the tires aren't spinning, is a slipping clutch. I guess you had better start saving your money $$$$.

It sounds like a slipping clutch. Put it in 4th and let off the clutch slowly. The car should stall. Just a dumb question but you sure your foot is off the clutch fully? I have seen some people drag the clutch and kill it like that not a fun thing to do. Can you get a video of the situation? It could make diagnosis easier.

maybe its the pressure release valve that causes slower engagement on the clutch, I'll get southernboy to chime in here...

This would be my guess as well. If it was starting to slip, especially in the manner described, it would be doing it all of the time under throttle or load conditions.

To the OP, try this.

Find yourself a hill in a safe residential area or somewhere where you are not going to be a hinderance to anyone. Get your transmission into third gear before ascending the hill and as you go up the hill, add throttle. Does this occur under these conditions? Is it fine and then suddenly not fine?

There is one other thing to consider and that is an actual slipping clutch. In first gear, the clutch experiences the least amount of stress (as in resistance) to forward motion because of the gear ratios of first gear and the final drive. There is quite a difference between first gear's ratio and that of second gear, so a slipping clutch is more apt to show up in second than in first, and more in third than in second. Also at 2000 RPM your engine is capable of delivering over 80% of its rated torque to the transmission so clutch slip could occur at that low of an engine speed.

Does this happen consistently and under hard throttle in 3rd and 4th gear, too or is it random?

Sounds like it may be the clutch.

In retrospect, it does start to sound more along those lines. For it to be the control valve, one who have to go through some hard shifts and I would bet his engine would reach for redline under those circumstances.

How many miles do you have on your '06 and are you the original owner?

it has 26,795miles on it

2nd owner

when i first wrote the post it was possible for me to drive almost regular NOW a couple of days later it is even worse

now in second i have to go to almost 4000 rpms just barely move the car i also got on the highway and was almost at a continuous 5000 rpms just to keep the car at 55 60 mph also i did another test when i put it in 6th gear the revs will jump as if im in 2nd ill be cruiseing in 6th and i press the gas and they jump into the 5000 rpm range in 6th and right after i smell the clutch

and it is doing it in every gear except 1st

and im starting to think its the clutch because when i let off in 1st there is really low pull meaning i can let off really quick but when i first got it i had to ease off or it would cut off

im gonna have to stop driving it and get it to a repair shop 2morrow

First off, 27,000 miles in incredibly low mileage for a clutch to go out on you. Of course, you don't know how the car was treated before you bought it. Under normal conditions, assuming the driver knows how to properly operate a manual transmission, you should expect 8 to 10 times that kind of mileage from your clutch. And yes, what you are now describing leaves little doubt that it is the clutch that is going - quickly.

I virtually never venture into Maryland and DC even less (last time was three years ago), so hopefully someone who knows those areas will offer suggestions for you. I would not drive that car at all if you can help it. Rent one or take public transportation if you are able. The worse case would be to have the car fail to move at all during a moment when you least need that to happen (intersection, merging, etc.).

If you are willing to take the car into Virginia, Curry's Auto Service seems to have a good rep, though somewhat pricey from what I've heard. There's also a little shop in Haymarket called Haymarket Motors that has customers from DC and Maryland coming to it. They can be a little slow, but they're pretty good.
