Acceleration hesitation in 1st Gear
Acceleration hesitation in 1st Gear
Over the past few days I have noticed a weird hesitation while accelerating from a stop in first gear.
I have a 2008 TL-S with a six speed manual. I have owned it for over three years and have never noticed this issue. Basically it happens while accelerating at full throttle from a stop in only first gear. At about 5000 rpm the engine feels as though the fuel is cut and the engine loses power and as soon as the rpms drop a bit...the engine comes back strong. Shift to second and run to redline no problems. I have tried turning the VSA/traction control off but it doesn't make any difference. There are no idiot lights on...nor any error codes as well.
Its really pissing me off as the engine will not rev to redline in first gear at full throttle without this hesitation...makes me look like a manual rookie
.
I see some other threads with similar issues but nothing exactly what I am experiencing. I figured I would check with the real experts before taking it to the dealership.

Hey, I've noticed the same thing in my 07 Type S MT recently except more in 2nd gear around 3.5k rpm to full throttle. It almost felt like the clutch was slipping, but the RPM were proportional to my speed. I thought it might be heat soak since I run a short ram intake and the temps have been rising. Any gear above 4.5k rpm is fine and I can't replicate the issue. I found this link and did the pedal reset which was good, but not sure if that was the issue

2008 tl-s 6 sp. 1st gear hesitation
Hey I also have a 08 TL-S 6sp. and I just started to notice the same exact issue about 2 weeks ago. Same issue to a T. I have owned 2 of these cars and never had this issue. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.. I also would like to check here before I blow money on diag. time.
I also had this issue on my TL, although I have a 04 mt 6sp non type s. Start by making sure your air filter is clean. I have a CAI on mine, and the filter was pretty dirty. That caused most of the hesitation I was feeling. After cleaning the filter the issue was not as bad, but still there. I changed my spark plugs next, still helped... but didnt fix it. Next I did the seafoam cleaning, steps can be found on this site pretty easy, I am not one for magic fixes..... but this has seemed to have fixed my issue.
Have you gotten your APP (Accelerator Pedal Sensor) checked/replaced? I had similar issue and a new APP fixed the issue....man, it's like a brand new car again!

Problem Solved !
Took the TL to the dealership and one of the techs there took the car for a boot and was able to replicate the hesitation. We chatted about at what RPM the VTEC solenoids become active which he figured was around 5200-5500 RPM...right at the same RPM as the hesitation.
Got back to the shop from the test drive and the first thing he checked was engine oil level.
The engine oil level was low...like near the bottom marker on the dip stick. I don't religiously check the engine oil level....more like every second fuel fill up as past history has shown the level doesn't change all that much. My TL doesn't chew through oil but it does eat a bit in between oil changes....but never enough to have to add any additional oil.
So tech figured since the oil level was so low....it was causing a low oil pressure situation which caused the VTEC solenoids to malfunction and not activate.
Changed oil and filter....no other work was done to any sensors...test drove TL again and hesitation was gone!
It was a simple fix for something I figured could be very pricey.
Joy in Type S land once again...
