AC Compressor Question
Hi Everyone,
In efforts to keep miles low i've had my 2005 TL pretty much parked for the last two years w/ very little milage in that time.
Anyways I have rescurrected the TL today took to service for a oil change and check up.
I noticed even before parking the car, I would hear a sweeking noise from the passenger side when i would have the AC on.
They told me today they noticed some metal shaving on the AC compressor and recommended I change it out. Parks and labor 1600 bucks!
So I was looking at the part list. They listed:
My questions are:
Anyone have any experience with this Denso part? Will i still need to purchase hte Stator Set even with this part?
Would anyone have a good site where I can get the parts as a decent price that doens't break the bank?
Thanks in advance
-Serge

Try rockauto.com. They have the Denso OEM replacement for $203.79 + shipping with the clutch already installed -- only 2 left in stock right now according to the listing. The so-called 'stator set' sounds like bullshit in a feeble attempt to take you to the cleaners. One part that should be replaced along with the compressor is the Receiver/Dryer, also available from rockauto for around $12. And if you really need to replace the main serpentine drive belt which might not be a bad idea at this age, they have the Gates replacement for $19.64.

DMZ,
Thanks so much for the feedback I really appreciate it. I went to the car and here are the parts they (the stealership) are telling me to swap out:
Diagram:

- 38810-RDA-A01 Compressor
- 38900-RCA-A01 Clutch Set
- 38924-RCA-A01 Stator Set (no idea what this is)
- 38920-RCA-A03 Belt
In that diagram whats the Receiver/Dryer you mentioned?
Thanks again for the help:

Wait, they want to replace the whole compressor because they found some shavings on the OUTSIDE? Time to find a new mechanic. It could be nothing more than an old dried out belt or maybe the clutch needs to be replaced. If the AC works, I wouldn't touch it unless it acts like it wants to freeze up.
I wouldn't even consider replacing the compressor. Metal shavings on the outside mean nothing. They could be from anywhere and when a compressor fails any metal is contained inside.

Guys,
Thanks so much for the comments. All this is from me saying to them I har a squeeking noise when i have the AC on.
The AC works just fine, haven't noticed any issues at all.
Should I just replace the belt and the clutch?
Obviously I"m not going to them for help, what would you all suggest I do to resolve the issue?
Thanks Again,

It could be the belt or it could be an idler/tensioner pulley. Mine did this about 3 years ago then it went away and never came back. You can watch it as it cycles, make sure when the clutch engages it "spins up" instantly. As long as it doesn't do a slow spool up the clutch should be fine.

Shavings on the outside can mean a few things. It might just be some rust that was on the clutch from the car sitting. Running the A/C might have cleaned the rust off and deposited it on the outside of the compressor. Same thing as brake rotors getting rusty after sitting. With the car off reach down and spin the center portion of the compressor. It will not spin like a bearing, but it should be smooth with some resistance. If is not smooth, I would change out the compressor. If the compressor seizes you will need to also change the dryer, expansion valve, and flush the system. More than likely the metal they see on the outside is just rust, but I would spin it to check

Based on everyone's very helpful comments I'm thinking since I was going to do the timing belt anways getting this kit http://www.timingbeltkit.com/servlet...t-tl%2C/Detail
Brings a drive belt replacement, I'm hoping its just a squeeking belt.
Am I being naive to think that would solve my noise issue?
Worse Case i'll just have to suck it up and get that Denso compressor listed in the thread. Do i have to recharge the system if the compressor is replaced?

Yes you would need to recharge the system. There is obviously nothing wrong with the compressor. There could be an issue with the clutch that can be replaced if necessary. I think your issue is the car has been sitting for two years. More than likely its the tensioner or a pulley.

Yeah dude if the A/C is cooling, dont replace the compressor. It is not just a bolt in job. You need to properly evacuate the system, pull a vacuum, and recharge the system with refridgerant. You would need a R134a manifold, and a vaccum pump. All of which can be rented or bought at harbor freight, but its still a pain. And every time you open the system you need to replace any o-rings removes, and replace the reciever dryer.
Use a spray bottle to spritz a bit of water on the belt. If it stops the squeaking, replace the belt and tensioner.
