ac compressor going bad?
ac compressor going bad?
could my ac compressor be going bad on my car? my 05 tl at 67k miles and the ac compressor seems to whine soo much when the fan turns on.. then once it shuts off its all gravy... im tried lubing it up with some wd40 but it still whine like no others..
yeah the thing is i've just had my serpentine belt changed at 60k miles dued to power steering noise issues.. which ended up being the power steering inlet o ring.. but ill check my belt again tomorrow
It's more than likely the pulley bearing to your ac compressor. Unload the drivebelt tensioner and try rocking the pulley side to side. If it feels a little bit wobbly then for sure it's the bearing. Pull the compressor out, press in a new bearing and you should be good. Don't spray WD40 on your belt & pulleys. Buy belt dressing instead.

what are the chaces that the noise is actually your tensioner?
have someone in car while you stand out side in view of the tensioner. now have the ac turned on /off do you see that excessive wobble on the tensioner pulleys? noticed it only when the ac clutch is engaged? well chances are your tensioner might be at fault. im pretty sure if the ac compressor's pulley was going bad, youd here that noise at all times. not only when the clutch is engaged. and lets say that compressor was locked? well the ac clutch would not even engage.
...my 2 cents
good luck

here a little update on my situation.. your right eg5.. i had my cousin take a look at my car.. cause you use to be a mechanic for an repair shop.. it seems that my tensioner is getting loose cause he tugged on the serpentine belt and it made the exact sound as it making when ever the ac fans kicks in and what not.. just not as rapid of course but yeah.. i picked up a gates tensioner today and hopefully gonna swap it any day now.. any clue if its hard or not to swap out? i didnt even do the serpentine belt swap my self.. but im not totally a nub with taking stuff apart and putting it back together correctly
Look up the Service Bulletin 08-049, dated October 31, 2008. It covers the installation of a new belt tensioner. I replaced only the tensioner pulley and idler pulley on mine. Lower cost ($40) but found it was tough to get to the belt tensioner mounting bolts due to the location. This is not an easy job to do, I have a midwest TL and the mounting bolts needed PB Blaster to get them loose. You may want to get a listening tube to help identify the noise location, before you start this job. Taking the belt off is the easy part...you may want to have someone fix this noise problem for you.
It sounds like the compressor being the root cause to me.
Good Luck

dont forget the belt aswell. ive seen a mdx come in for the same "chirping" noise three times, before he finally coughed up 35 bux for the belt. all those three times the tensioner was replaced for the same noise. that is to say your tensioner is at fault
well the belt only has like maybe 7k miles on it.. i replace it before cause i thought it cause the whine when ever i had cold starts in the morning but that ended up being just the power steering o ring.. so is it really necessary to replace it again
just finish putting in my new belt drive tensioner.. it got rid of the sound... thank god.. cost me about 80 bucks for a gates one from o'reilly auto parts worth every penny for me i guess.. i wont be embrass to blast my ac on all the time anymore cause its sound FREE!!! took me about an hour of actually doing anything once i finally got all the right tools to fiddle with it (my garage is a mess everything and anything in it)
oh its all there its just everyone leaves there junk in the garage... both attic is full and our garage packed up with enough stuff where we barely have room for 1 car to go in, but yeah there tool drawer and all those good stuff in there just.... im not the only one fixing my car up in that garage.. have bro's and what not using the same tools and everything never gets placed back into the right place so yeah clutter + people not putting tools back = hours of work for a short job =[
lol. i had the same problem when i used to live with my parents. it was not uncommon to find some wrenches/sockets in the near by bushes.(were usually thrown by my frustrated brother)
glod you took care of that pesky tensioner

sorry to revive this thread.
So changing the auto Tensioner solved the problem?
Sems that it did. Just remember, if the noise is heard when the A/C compressor is energized, it can't be the clutch bearing. If that bearing is bad, it will make noise when the compressor is deactivated, as at that time it's the bearing's job to allow the clutch to spin, but the compressor internals aren't.
clutch doesnt spin when compressor is off. clutch is directly attached to compressor (shaft to internals) the pulley rides free from compressor at all times. when compressor energizes, clutch is pulled via electromagnetic current by the coil(stator) to the pulley then the compressor has no other choice than to spin. causing the pumping action of refriferant.

the ac belt tensioner is a common failure, mine started making noise at 45- and finally failed at 80
When you replace that belt you may as well replace the tensioner
Im guessing we rev them more than anticipated by honda engineers- give us a redline and we will test it!!
Its a good lesson when planning for the timing belt service--new tensioners!!
