AC on on auto during cold weather

I think that my AC stays on at all times when my HVAC is set to auto no matter what the temperature outside.

My car blows cool air when the temp outside is 50 or above. When I push the AC button, deactivating the AC and taking the HVAC off of auto the air warms up.

Has anyone else experienced this?

The a/c should always be on in auto and defrost. It dries the air coming into the car...so your windows don't fog up.

It's on even at -20F. Although I turn it off and it doesn't make any difference in terms of fogging in my area.

Well, that explains it. This seems very wasteful. My old Volvo had automatic HVAC and it only turned the compressor on in the summer or when defrost was on. This worked perfectly well.

Also, the overall effect is that the system blows cold air when it should be blowing ambient temp air or slightly warmed air.

You can run HVAC in Auto Mode without AC

You can run HVAC in Auto Mode without AC

Set-up system in AUTO mode with your preferred settings.

Then hit AC button and sytem will stay in AUTO mode without AC. The screen will say AC OFF and will look like AUTO mode (No vent or floor icons will be lit).

There is one sentence in the manual at the end of AUTO mode that indicates that you can override (2006 TL)

In New England there is no need for AC cooled air in the winter to help regulate inside temp when it get to warm inside. The outside air is sufficient.

I have been running this mode since end of warm weather.

You can go to manual defrost and back and the setting remains.

OK. I'm gonna be the old retro-grouch that pipes in and says "just remember run your compressor enough during the winter to keep the lubricant in the refrigerant circulated properly. A seized compressor will cost far, far more than the gas you might save by not running it." OK, let the arguments begin on if that's all true or not.

That is very true. You wouldn't want your engine sitting for months without being started occasionally would you? That's all the compressor is...just a miniature engine.

There should be a "20hp" sticker on the A/C button .. so when you turn it off, you get those 20 ponies back ..

any way to turn off A/C in defrost mode?

As it says..my friend has a 2006 TL and he wants to know if there is ANY way to disable the AC when he uses defrost mode? Yes we know why it defrosts..to dry the air. Just sometimes he likes to drive with air coming thru the defrost vents and wants to save gas. I have an RSX and there is a programming "trick" to be able to hit the "ac button" and turn off the ac when in defrost mode. Please help, thanks!
