Question 6MT Drivers: Do you hear a click when backing up?

Just wanted to see if anyone else hears a slight click when putting into R and backing up.

For me this typically happens when i park in front of my house. The street in front of my house has a slight grade so when i park on the side of the street, im usually pointed downward and backing up to park. b/c im reversing up hill, the car does roll forward a little. This is where i seem to hear it.

Nothing loud or anything, just a little click from outside the car. I don't feel anything in the clutch or shifter.

Just curious. Doesn't seem like a problem.

If you stood outside of your car while someone else was shifting through the gears, engine off, you'd heard a "snick" sound there, too. It's the dog teeth engaging their respective hubs.

You probably already know that when you shift gears, you are not really shifting gears at all.. as in moving small or larger gears to mesh with larger or smallers ones. This does not take place. Like virtually all manual transmissions, they are constant mesh which means that all of the drive gears are "meshed' and all of the driven gears are meshed.

just to clarify, i don't hear it so much when i shift, but after i've shifted in R and then i give it some gas and then start to move. i figured that its probably something in the drive train just engaging when in change direction.

Could it be the switch that does not allow the engine to start unless the clutch is depresssed?

The click going into reverse is normal. This is common to every manual tranny car I've owned (12 cars).

jennarocks, I've got the same issue. My click can be heard once I start to reverse, like you. It will also click any time I remove my foot from the clutch as a downshift. I can only hear it in 1st and sometimes 2nd. It started as a slight click only 1 time every morning turning from my driveway. I feel it is a halfshaft issue, That or the outer CV joint themselvs. I've got 30,000 miles on mine and it just started around 1,500 miles ago. If I find any more information after I make soem time to take it in, Ill let you know.

Yeah, what he described further sounds like the CV joints.. the movement as the halfshafts change direction.

I have this too. I think it is either the parking brake grabbing the rotor or the shim on the breakpad clicking as the pad has worn down on my right rear caliper (that is where I have this click) 04 29K...

i had this issue for about 1-2 months. I took the car in last week, and originally they thought it was the shims for the brembos, but it turned out to be a few bolts under the car (around the suspension/axle) that were loose/ not torqued correctly. I'd go bring it in to get it checked out! Or you can retorque yourself.

but would that explain the clicking that he's hearing when he downshifts?

Could you send me a pic of where they retorqued the bolts? Or any description of of a more exact location would be greatly appreciated.

Update:

I got my passenger front transaxle and inner boot replaced. looks like there was some damage and now it appears to be all good.

If any of you have the slightest suspicion or hear something unusual, take it to the dealership.
