3rd gear issue

I just got my 05 6 speed ASPEC TL a week ago and every once and a while it will grind a little when i shift into 3rd. After reading around the forum i realize that this is a common problem with the 6 speeds. My car has 54,000 miles on it so the warranty is up. My question is will acura possibly do a Goodwill repair on my tranny? I know over on the 2nd gen side it's not uncommon for acura to replace out of warranty trannys out of goodwill. I live a couple hours away from a dealer so i can't just pop in. Whats my best option? call the dealer and talk to the service manager, or call acura client care and ask if they will goodwill it? Any input is appreciated.

I believe that because it is a TSB they will still do it even though you are out of warranty. I would ask when I call to make the appointment to take it in if it were me. Definitely worth having done in my opinion. I went from thinking about trading my TL because I hated shifting to 3rd to loving everything about my car.

3rd gear

same problem occured when i hit 10,000 miles. 3rd gear kept grinding, or harder to push in. I'd say you call the dealer about the 3rd gear transmission, and tell them that this is a common problem. GL on claiming your warranty, because they're going to argue about it and make you pay. I acutally got mine fixed, i drpped it off at the dealer, and they replaced the 3rd gear synchros. and no problems since!

I'm probably just going to try out the syncromesh fluid and see how that works. One question, after reading around i have seen a few people state that the penzoil syncromesh fluid is the exact same as the GM stuff, just in a different bottle. is there any truth to this. It would be nice to go to autozone and be able to get it for 5 bucks a quart. Or should i be safe and just buy the gm stuff.

I used the GM stuff so I can't say.

This stuff really worked well in my case. I've been on it for about 10K miles with no problems. I am thinking about changing it soon just to see how much syncro dust is in the fluid this time. It was pretty shocking to see how much was in the original fill after just a few thousand miles.

Fluid will not fix anything. Just call the dealer, before the problem gets worse.

well the one dealer i called was not willing to do any goodwill work on the transmission. I guess i can call acura client services and see if i can get anywhere with them. You would think they would help being that it's a known defect in their transmission.

Let's just rename these never ending 3rd gear issue threads:

Alfred and practically all the 6MT owners here recommend:

to solve the problem.

What, is this one about the 50th or so?
OK Mods, time to close this thread too.............

Really, before the new syncro's Acura was recommending a fluid swap, to see if that would fix the issue. The GMSM is a better fluid than Honda's new MTF, no doubt, straight up fact.

I never in million years think I would say a fluid fixed a problem like this. In this case it actually does. If you have a trusted quality dealer, do the TSB. Dropping a transaxle and cracking it open is not something I would be willing to risk to an unknown average dealer, considering the room for error, and some of the 6MT owners feedback, after the TSB.

My thoughts exactly.

I've had major work done by dealers and they only managed to screw it up further.

If the fluid swap doesn't work, then consider it. But I don't know if I've heard anyone say it didn't.

I actually pick mine up tomorrow from a dealer after getting them to fix it per the TSB. They are keeping it an extra day to road-test it to ensure the tranny is good and that the problem is resolved.

I prefer to have it fixed the right way than rely on some work-around...only to haunt you later down the road...

I do agree that it also depends on if you have a reliable and trust-worthy dealership you can take it to. In my case, I have 2 pretty reputable dealerships in my area. Having a good service rep that you've built a good relationship with also goes a long way.

I just got an 05 6 speed and the same thing happened to me. 3rd gear is sometimes hard to get into. And it poped out once. But in canada there is no recall so I am screwed. I am taking it in for them to see whats going since I still have 10000km on the powertrain warranty so I am hoping they dont make up some BS excuse not to fix it.

just picked her this afternoon. wow what a difference. shifting in all gears
feel smoother than before. they did a killer job. thorough. and the techs
were very good about wanting to keep the car a bit longer to keep test driving
it and ensuring it was performing as it should. rather than get annoyed at keeping
the car longer, I thanked them immensely for taking the extra time to be thorough.

that's the kind of relationship building I'm talking about..
