2006 TL Headlight vs Type-S headlight help?!?!?!?!?

ok folks, I recently purchased a 2006 tl and the front end was more or less missing, it had been wrecked, headlights, cooling, bumper assembly, radiator support etc all gone, I recently purchased a pair of headlights off ebay for a tl, come to find out they are tl type-s lights, they look very similar but the inside light bulb will not go in and seat, will the headlights work fine I just need to change that bulb and buy the one for a tl-s and the plug will be the same or ?? Like I said, the mounting tabs and everything look the same, but with not having anything to go by to compare to makes things difficult, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks again.

TL-S has DRLs, where the 04-06 has the fog on the headlights..

04-06--- 9006
TL-s ----9005

TLS also have the black chrome and semi-cleared difuser.

Right, I know some members have done headlight swaps to from the 04-06 to the TL-S. The wiring is different and the 04-06 didnt have fogs on the bumper but the tl-s does which adds a nice touch. Other than that all the mounting and everything is exactly the same.

Dont do the swap, I am helping a member right now who did a swap and actually melted the shrouds around the DRLs.

What happens is that the DRLs in the 07-08 headlights use 9005 bulbs which are suppose to run at 6.4 Volts and in 04-06 headlights the opening is made for fog lights using 9006 bulbs at full 12 volts. What this means is that when you swap your 9006 bulb into the DRL opening and turn it on it generates heat that the shrouds are not made to withstand hence they melt. I have had this problem with two of the members whos headlights I have worked on in the past.

^^^ I dont think its the size of the bulb... but more that the fogs run at higher current that what DRL are on TLS and Base 07-08.

i would suggest leaving the DRL's unplugged. i never really liked them in the first place. so if your not for drl's just leave them unplugged. one less thing to worry about. everything else should plug up together. also the signals are different. you might have to mod it a bit. the low beam should go right in.

headlight help tl vs tl type-s

I have no clue what to do, like I said, I have whats left of the original tl lights, which means, ballasts, ignitors, bulbs, and wiring, as far as the headlight lenses and what not, they are fried, completely shattered inside, I noticed the mounting brackets were identical and I assumed everything would mount up the same, I just tried to switch the xenon bulb out of the original tl light to the type-s and it wouldnt lock into place, what to do now? should I try to return the type-s headlights to save myself the trouble and future headache of possibility of shroud meltdown, or try it and see how it goes? sorry for being such a newbie with all the questions, I've never had this sort of problem before, thanks again to everyone for their input, I appreciate everyones time with my issue.

why not switch the fog light bulb and pigtail (bulb harness) to a 9005 and use the TL-S headlight? This way you could use the headlight and not have to worry about melting the shroud.

^^^^or you can put them on the black market, and purchase some 04-06 on ebay. Many Base 07-08 want to get these because they look better than the base.
I had my open and converted to look like the ones you have

Wait it's either too early or you guys are confusing me....

Type-S headlights will fit on a base (04-08 base)? It's just a matter of wiring?

I was under the impression the headlights have minor dimension differences...

so how can we prevent this?? can we just add 9005 to the drl opening? or should we just rewire the whole thing

reviving an old thread but I came across this thread while searching for new headlights. I also have a 2006 but am located in Canada where DRL's are standard. Does this mean all the 04-06 headlights I'm finding on ebay from the US won't work in my car but the Type-S will?

from what it seems like here since I already have DRLs it should be plug and play with Type-S lights right?

DRL being standard in Canada simply means the car is wired for DRL. Nothing to do with the headlight housings themselves.

If you want to install Type S headlights into your car though, you're going to have to be cognizant that the DRL bulb is a different size between the 04-06 versus the 07-08. 9006 versus 9006 I believe ? Might have to get crafty with the male plug. But I'll let others that may have already done this chime in.

That makes it sound like it should work.

The difference between the bulbs are the two guides in which the male plug mates with the female. Also the socket is just a tad different as well:

If you grind down the bulb both the guides the the part that rotates into the socket, you can get away with using the existing DRL bulb in the new housing.

OR you can make a quick harness (9006 female to 9006 male) and use a proper 9005 bulb in the Type S housing.

So I imagine you meant 9006 vs 9005.
