'08 TL Fuel Guage Problem

I bought a CPO '08 TL a few weeks back, and I have a fuel guage problem.

Here are the symptoms:
- When full, the fuel needle will go no higher than 2 'notches' down from full.
- The needle flies back to half after 200km (120 miles). When I fill up, it will only take 20 litres (~4 gallons)
- Even at 1/4 full, the tank will only accept 36 litres (~7.5 gallons)

I have had it back to the dealer 3x times and they can not find any problem. At the last visit they replaced the fuel sender and it behaves exactly the same.

Anybody experience the same, or have any insight on this issue?

na man sorry never had that issue, weird though could it be the gage in the cluster itself that's screwed, Dealer should fix this especially that the car is under warranty...

I am not sure about that but I bought my 07 TL-S 1 week ago and I have a "tighten fuel cap" light that turns on randomly. I am at the dealership now to see what they say. I have seen many threads on 3G TL's fuel electronic issues. I hope u get your baby fixed.

most likely a faulty fuel sending unit. you can test the guage by applying the required amt of voltage that will result in a full reading. if the needle goes where it should, it's the sender, if not test wiring up to cluster for problems. if wiring is good then guage is bad

Since they've already replaced the sending unit, I would start with connections and grounds.

What does your miles to empty read when you fill it up?

Heres how to test the gauge cluster, see if it is working properly

Good question, never checked. The trip computer however, does seem to work correctly, as when I fill up around 'indicated' half tank (4 gallons), it shows 500 kms to empty (~310 miles).

Before they replaced the fuel pump/sending unit, they ran some tests (I would hope connections and ground), and found no issues.

I'm gonna try the gauge sweep that riomp300 posted. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
