did you check your oil level? something like this happened to me with another car of mine. the oil was low and the engine spun a rod inside. That is quite a loud knocking though, is yours real loud?

If you have warranty then tow it to a dealer.

The oil was fine when i checked it, it was a quiet knock almost a tapping sound.

sounds like bad gas. You know when something major goes wrong, its not a ping, its a loud knocking. Although that really doesn't explain the oil light. I am interested to find out. I hope its nothing too serious!

well the word is in, oil pump is F*&$#ED so an engine teardown is required to confirm it is the oil pump so the waranty will cover it. I was also told that I may need a new engine.... WTF i have had the car for a month and a half and have put 2k on it and it only has 45k on the car... this does not sound like a high class car... This is my first acura and may be my last...

Has anyone else had an oil pump failure?

Wow! Glad you have warranty and they are taking care of it. Don't let this deter you from enjoying your ride.

Im going to try not to let it bother me too much. They said they were either going to rebuild the bottom part of the engine because they found shavings in the oil pan, or find a like engine of same year and millage which will be hard to do because its an 05 with only 45k on it. The lowest engines they have found have close to 75k on it. One of the main reason I got this one was because of the low miles.

If you have a warranty on the car, don't accept a used engine. The engine should be rebuilt or replaced with a rebuilt engine. Personally, I would recommend replacement. Metal shavings indicate bad crank, bearings, and who knows what else. A rebuilt engine comes with its own warranty. Find out what it will be before you allow them to get one. Good luck.

Like they said, it's under warranty, don't let them put a used engine. It's better to replace with a completely new (rebuilt) or rebuilt yours from start.

From what i understand as of now my engine will be rebuilt. There response was at the least rebuild the lower portion of the engine due to the oil shavings (from more than likely the barrings) in the oil pan. or the new rebuilt engine.

either way i should get a warranty on the engine correct?

which should i push/request?

well day 21 still at the dealer...

It is getting fixed with a new engine without money from my pocket.
what was determined to be the problem was an oil pump failure due to a bad helicoil in the oil pan that was supposed to replace the oil plug. The helicoil repair was not done correctly and started to come apart in the oil clogging the oil pump and causing the failure. Metal shavings were found in the oil and a new engine from California is going in. It is supposed to be done tmrw I hope.

Wow, sounds like it's progressing slowely but surely. Good thing you had a warranty. This thread actually worries me cause I just got an '04 less than months ago (not even a second car payment made) with 27,000 miles and I'm hoping this doesn't happen to me. I don't have any warranty (purchased at a non-acura dealership)

sorry to hear about the ride. the upside is that the dealer is taking care of you, and it won't cost you anything with the warranty. don't let this deter you from acura. whatever happened probably happened with the previous owner and based on what you said...something definitely happened when the previous owner had it.

there are downsides to used vehicles, but you got a bad apple. yes, its a huge inconvenience, but your car will be fixed (we hope, by competent techs). once you get your car back, enjoy it. if you take care of the car, it'll take care of you for many years to come.

the work will be warrantied and so will the rebuild...ask the service advisor of that warranty.

hopefully the engine is fixed 100% so he can take his words back.

one thing i've experienced with all honda/acura i've owned is; they wont leave you stranded on the side of the road.

p.s..ask me how many times my audi left me stranded on the highway over some b.s sensor.

May or will,
I find even the thought of it is bad lol

Very bad luck though OP but you shouldn't even consider it your last since they're fixing it for free.

my 93 integra left my dad and myself at the side of the road on separate occasions. First was the timing belt snapping. New belt fixed the problem. Second time was my cat took a dump (pun not intended?) and clogged the exhaust.

but then again the car is like 2.5 times the age of the oldest 3G TL.

My sister's civic on the other hand runs like clockwork at nearly 100k miles with just oil changes and gas. never left any of us stranded. For 9 months I was driving 500 miles a week at least. Not a single hiccup.

Just recently my mother's 2nd transmission in her 01 Odyssey failed. Rebuilt at ~127k miles for $2800. First trans was replaced at 60k with a rebuilt from Honda under warranty/recall.

In the end YMMV. My TL has not left me stranded since I bought it in Feb. OP, glad you're getting it fixed properly and with no money out of pocket. Are you driving a rental for the time being?

^ yes they have me in a new 2012 TSX. I wouldnt think I would miss my TL like I do but I cant wait to get it back. Now that I know it is going to be fixed for free with an engine with less miles on it than what it went in with is a plus. As for the may be my last quote I will say I am eating my words now that I know that the cause of everything was an oil change gone wrong from a dumb a$$ that the previous owner went to. Acura service is standing behind there work 100% and a written garantee on there work is nice too. All in All like previously stated im pretty much getting a new car. It just threw me off a bit when it broke down less than 2 months after getting the car.
