'05 TL Battery Drain

I own an 05 TL no navigation. I have been through 3 batteries the last 12 months. It appears that if the car is not started for several days the battery drains. The car is currently at the Acura dealer. The service rep told me they charged the battery and found no problem. She also said it is normal for the battery to drain if it sits for 4 or 5 days. Can this be true? I find that very hard to believe. If it is true, it’s is unacceptable, going to have to find another ride.
Is this normal?

Not normal. Our TL sits for weeks at a time between uses. Easy to see if there is a drain using a MM.

I also have an 05 TL. I had my battery replaced under warranty about 2 or three years ago. I've had the car idle for one month without any issue since then. However, I had to replace the battery yesterday. I am out of warranty. I did it at Autozone because I don't trust the batteries the dealer sells.

I got my car new in the middle of 06 and had to replace my battery at the beginning of 08. I thought maybe it was the cold NY winter that may have put a strain on the battery. I took it to a local shop and they tested the battery and alternator at the time and they showed me some printout that showed inconsistencies in the alternator output and it wasnt recharging my batter correctly? (sorry not mechanically inclined)

I then took it to the acura dealership and asked them to do the same test but they found nothing wrong and assured me the batteries have a limited lifespan.

now thinking back at it i think they MIGHT have gave me some BS because the car was still under warranty, or maybe the local shop was BS'ing me ...

I changed my OEM battery w/ an interstate battery at the start of 08 and low and behold as soon as some cold weather comes in this year, im noticing the same symptoms i had 1 1/2 years ago.

has anyone else replaced 2 batteries in a little over 3 years?

Man I swear...your problem is exactly what I am going through right now. Replaced battery under warranty year and half ago. Now that sucker won't hold a charge overnight. I'll take it to the Dealer to make sure there isn't anything else wrong. Any good recommendations for a replacement?.....no dealers please

acura batteries suck! Your best bet is to get an aftermarket one that'll last longer and have a better warranty, plus it's cheaper!

The car was not started for 4 days, battery remained strong. Looking good. I suspect the HFL being the culprit. Stay tuned!
Anyone know what the normal battery current should be when car is off?

it should be drawing about 25-30 milliamps when the car is off. To figure this out, set it in a series with the positive terminal of the battery.

I bet it is NOT your battery. My '07 TL was going dead too. Based on info I read on this site and others I narrowed it down to the Bluetooth Hands Free Link. Took it to the dealer and told my problem and had them check that out specifically. They checked the battery drawn with everthing off (as off as it gets). Something was still drawing too much power. When they unplugged the HFL, the batterey drawn dropped to normal. They are replacing my HFL under warranty.

If you have an 07-08, it could be this TSB:

What do you mean you can see the file? Just click on those links and it'll take you straight to them.

Have you had your whole charging system checked? Could be an alternator...

I've gone through 4 batteries within the past 4 years. I did as someone else posted and just kept replacing the batteries under warranty until the last trip whereupon I was told I needed to pay full price. AAA began billing me to have them come give my car a charge as I apparently already had too many service calls for the year (all for jump-starts) so I went to Harbor Freight and purchased the same charger I saw the AAA driver use on my car and it's saved me on every occasion; I began having a dead battery every single freaking morning. I have been told by the stealership/AAA/Pepboys that: I don't drive enough miles to charge the battery, that the car sits too long without use, that Acuras have a lot of technology and thus their batteries don't last too long, blah, blah, blah...crap, crap crap. Tonight I followed the instructions I found after repeatedly googling, "Why does my Acura TL battery die every day" which was an awesome 6-minute video on YouTube and I am confident the culprit is the now removed HFL unit, which incidentally has not worked since 2010. My TL is a 2006. When I pulled the little piece of shit out after finally extracting it from the ceiling I nearly burned my fingers; it was scalding hot and yet my car had been chilling in the garage for 4+ hours. Something ain't right! Anywho, I can't wait to see whether the car starts tomorrow.

The battery needs to be a group 24F battery. I tried the Optima yellow 34 78 something... dead in 3 months, I brought it back from the dead with a solar charger. This battery needs a longer time to charge than 24F batteries while the engine is running. So if you're taking 15 min. trips or shorter this battery is not your best choice. I got a group 24F Exide battery from Home Depot and so far I have 10 months and it looks like a good battery. I make a 20 - 30 min average trip everyday. HFL is disconnected even tho it's still running good. I found that isimple has a 165ma current draw when the car is off so it went to igarbage. I see the memory driver 1 LED on the door it never goes off after the car is armed unless you change a seat setting but that's no biggie. Other than that no major voltage draw.
