04 TL with AT: Transmission issue

Hey everyone,
2004 TL – Auto w/ 77K miles.

I started having a transmission issue yesterday and was stuck on the road for awhile. When I slowed down at a tol both then pulled off, the car started acting funny. I was pressing the accelerator and the engine would rev close 3-5000 RPM but it wouldn’t accelerate at its normal rate. So, I pulled over, opened the hood and saw Transmission oil in the engine bay. I waited a few minutes and shifted from park to drive and then reverse but the car wouldn’t move (I rolled it in reverse to a side street since I was on a slight slope). I got out of the car an noticed a puddle of transmission fluid on the ground where the car previously was parked.

Anyone else that has encountered this, what was it?
Any thoughts are appreciated.

There are external hoses on the AT, maybe one let go. Need to clean the area to see if any problem is visable. If not, add fluid, start and take a look.

Were you driving for a long distance? Something like that happened to me but I had been driving for a couple hours before it overheated. It just overheated and shot fliud out of the vent on top of the tranny

good luck but you are most likely going to need a new trans.

Like Turbonut said, check the external hose near the firewall.

If that's ok, there's an overflow on top of the trans, a little metal tube in a U shape. It will puke fluid all over the top of the trans if it overheats. If you see fluid all over the top of the trans, it overheated. Now you have to find out why.

Were you pulling any severe hills in 5th? The logic is very flawed in the PCM. It will unlock the convertor in 5th instead of downshifting to 4th. I've found that if you manually downshift to 4th when climbing a hill the convertor will lock back up and rpms will be the same as in 5th with the convertor unlocked. Now you're creating very little heat and you have more torque multiplication.

If you're lucky it overheated, puked and you did not have enough fluid to burn the clutches when you were revving it and it wouldn't go anywhere.

Most likely you need a new trans.

First thing to do is fill it with a NON Z1 OEM fluid and see what it does.
