The wind, a branch and my TL.

As the title says....and i came home to this...

i was sickened to come home to this. my car cover had a huge hole in it from the bike mount tearing through it. i was afraid to pull the cover off not knowing what i would see under it.

i'll take more pics in the morning.

it appears the roof rack took the brunt of the impact. the extender mount was broken. i'm not sure if the roof is dented where the feet are, i'm sure there are a few other dings...i'll know more tomorrow. i'm so aggravated right now.

I am very sorry to hear about this TLtrigirl. I always complain about wind because I'm bigtime into fishing and when it's windy (which is 80% of the time lately), it messes things up when out in the boat. After seeing what happened to you I HATE wind even more!! I hope that either home owners or your Auto insurance will cover with no problems.

sorry to hear!

This is the main reason why I park in my garage, winter and summer (I use to only park in the garage in the winter).
Everytime I hear the mighty wind blowing outside I'm just so glad the TL is inside.

Watch someone say "Well some people don't have a garage to park in..."
It's just my story of why I park in a garage. Cool story bro me if you want.

taz and bugs bunny are safe and sound, though?

she's ok. it was more of a gentle swipe, since she said she wasn't even sure if the guy actually hit her. she actually just sold her TSX (turning into a money pit-in a bad way), so her new ride got swiped (she's only had it for a month).

It sucks that the other persons insurance wouldn't pick up the tab. Insurance....what a scam. It always seems to take forever on a claim and then you have the lingering thought of are the going to cancel me.

yes, from the tree that should have been cut down with its twin 3 weeks ago! the power company is suppose to cut that tree down soon b/c its near the main power line that straddles the backyard fenceline. a little late.

thanks.

so am i...didn't sleep well last night knowing my baby was injured and there is nothing i can do about it until the adjustor comes out. i think i'll sleep a little better once i get the car to the body shop to get the repair process started. even then, i'll be anxious b/c the car won't be at home.

sun is slowly coming up...i'll go freeze my butt off in an hour or so to get some pics.

thanks oscar. how's your car?

thanks to AZ i'm well armed with information to make sure i get the correct windshield

i can only imagine how much more damage would be on the car had i not used a car cover. the branch appeared to have rolled off the hood, b/c it was sitting in front of the car as it did in the first pic. there was actually a second hole/tear in the cover where the branch penetrated through the cover and scuffed the windshield really bad. will post daylight pics in a little bit. (sigh).

wow that sucks Jamie, I came home to find huge chunks of branches around my road and driveway as well. Lucky i was at work the whole day otherwise im sure my car would have been a victim as well.

Anyways, hope you go through a smooth fix. Like Oscar said, dont settle for anything less than OEM. Ive heard stories of third party windshields making noise and causing headaches etc..

make sure u read this:

windshields essentially are all the same, this could go on and on. "OEM" windshields just have the decal stamped on them. Most windshield being made by PPG.

OP, sorry to hear, but you have alot of bad luck.

It's daylight...

for kicks i put the cover back on the car to see what it looked like:

The evil branch that struck my car:

The rack that saved the car:

My windshield that ate the most damage (from what i can tell):

And the most visible body damage:

the clip that the branch hit (and broke the housing) has shifted a little. so i'm not sure if there is damage along the passanger roof line. i won't know until i pull the roof rack off. there are a few dings here and there on the body from the branch as well, but not appreciable in photos.

so between the car cover and the roof rack...it could have been a lot worse had those two items NOT been on the car.

we will see how the insurance handles this. now only if they would hurry up and call me back. (sigh). please let this process go smoothly...

the car karma is obscene for me in the last few months. (knock on wood) thankfully it's only been cosmetic in nature. please no more drama...i need a break from dealing with car crap for a while (sigh).

thanks shark. i know it could have been a lot worse. i could have been outside tinkering with the car. i thought for sure the hood was going to be messed up...i didn't see any deformities from the the cover before i pulled it off, so i was happy to see the hood was ok once i did. i saw the bike mount...i wasn't concerned about that...the windshield...ugh. the body of the car....reasonably unscathed. its just an inconvenience to have to deal with this...ugh.

ok mr. insurance adjustor CALL ME BACK! i'm trying to be patient.

I know the feeling of having to wait to hear back from the insurance adjuster. They usually have a 24 - 48 hours window to call you back. After that, I'd be calling them to see what's up.

On the bright side, once you get your replacement window, you won't have to see that registration decal on there for awhile. As for the fender, maybe PDR and some touch up paint could resolve that.

Understandable, but I'm assuming that it's held on there by adhesives. Would it have to be scraped off to transfer to a new windshield or would a new decal be issued if it's held up by adhesives?

I'm so glad that GA no longer requires that on our windshield.

damn that really sucks. Good thing you have the mount on the top of the car. What's the insurance requirement for front windshield replacement in VA? I've only dealt w/ that in Florida where they are required to give you a free replacement on front glass.

So sorry that happened to my almost twinsy

The cover is toast. Hopefully insurance will pay for another one. But they may not cover the aftermarket stuff (Thule rack, cover). The windshield is an easy repair. The fender may require a body shop if the dent is too big, otherwise paintless dent repair will fix it. The damage isn't as bad as I was expecting when you emailed me about it. Hopefully the roof isn't dented. That branch wasn't all that big but it sure caused a lot of damage.

mini update

spoke with the adjuster. he will be out tomorrow to do his assessment. i made it VERY clear that i wanted the exact same piece of glass by AP tech put back on the car. he told me to go ahead and pull the rack off before he got here (since its not covered by my insurance). so...my car is SO naked.

after removal of the rack...there are some scuffs where the clips were (compression and shift from the impact) and a few roof dings. looks like PDR may be in order. i'll find out what happens tomorrow. (sigh).

the windshield is a mess...the car will be flat bedded to the shop after the adjuster looks at it.

they scrape it off and then stick on the new windshield. no new ones issued. the county decal...that's easy to get onand off since i don't stick the whole thing on.

i don't own the house...and its a tight squeeze. however now...screw the tight squeeze...the TL is going in there...he has offered the garage to me on several occasions.

yeah that cover wasn't cheap either since it was custom fab from covercraft. dammit it was only a year old too!
