Smile Srg818's NBP progress thread

Hi my name is Serge and I'm a 3GTL-a-holic

The first time I got a look at one was when my brother purchased an 05 base TL and I got to enjoy it firsthand. After putting nearly 250k on my 01 Accord(and it starting to shed parts by the mile), I decided on an upgrade and the 3GTL(in 6MT!) was top of the list. It took 5 months(Sept '14- Jan '15) of searching the interwebs before finding a mint 07 CBP Type-S 6MT 3 states away but I drove down, put a deposit on it and took it home the next week. Unfortunately, as some of you may have seen in my other thread titled "Repairable vs Totaled?", my 6-month love story with the TL was cut short when I was broadsided and the car was called a loss by the insurance. After the insurance company cut me a check, I began the search for...drumroll - a 1972 Ford Pinto! ....I joke, another 3GTL-S of course

A few pics:

The 07 CBP:

R.I.P. CBP

This time I got lucky and found an 07 NBP Type-S 6MT with just over 50K miles on it.

The 07 NBP(stock):

So far, the only things I've done to it is to install H&R Sport springs, mount XXR530 wheels with Conti DWS06(great tires!) and change front pads+rotors.

Of course during the brake swap, 2 of the brembo caliper bolts took out all the aluminum threads on their way out, a common problem with galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. Luckily I had already ordered a TimeSert thread repair kit a month earlier that I intended to use on the CBP TL-S that was totaled. I drilled and tapped all 4 caliper mounting holes and now feel way more confident torquing those bolts to 125ft/lbs.

I'm also trying to figure out if I like the Type-S Aspec lip kit enough to spend time installing it. I don't know what it is about the Type-S Aspec kit but the front doesn't seem to flow with the car as well and protrudes more than I like. I greatly prefer the base 07-08 front lip much more to the Type-S Aspec front lip but am too skeered to mod my bumper.

Next on the list is the timing belt/water pump, rear brakes and getting that dang unnecessary mid-muffler out!

More updates/pics to come soon

Talking

The forecast up here in upstate NY called for 65 degrees Saturday and 7-15 inches of snow on Sunday(wtf ) I figured I'd better light a fire under my ass and get my pre-winter prep done STAT. I washed, claybar'd then waxed with Collinite 845. I didn't bother with the wheels since I will be putting on the Type-S OEM wheels with winter tires soon anyway. I also should get that nasty side mirror replaced

Set the mirror all the way in towards the door and I was able to use my fingers. It will feel like you will break the mirror but it is pretty sturdy. You do have to use a little bit of force though. There are 4 sets of clips on the back of the mirror.

Thanks for the tip. I was wondering about greasing the actuator socket/joint since I'm already taking the glass off, the clicking everytime I go to reverse is getting annoying.

I like the new pics....it's a shame to take off those wheels, but the OEM Type S ones still look good.

I found that it also streaks in the sun about 3 days later on black so I never use it for that anymore.
Looking good, man...so happy you got back into another one! They are a wonderful car, as you know.

For the mirror, heat the center of the glass with a blowdryer to soften the adhesive stuff...put mirror up and in as much as possible...if you look with a flashlight there's a slot for a fat flathead...insert it there and twist. It'll pop one edge out then you can get the other 3 by pulling.

Damn I'll have to keep an eye out for that. What do you recommend as an alternative?

Thank for the tip, I'll have to get off my lazy ass and order that damn mirror!

LOL...sure thing, man...
The one I keep coming back to is Wolfgang's deep gloss paint sealant...it's pricey, but it is very very good.

Thanks guys, I'll have to get a bottle of that stuff! It looks like it's long-lasting like Collinite which I'm very happy to hear because even though I like spending a Saturday afternoon detailing and waxing my baby but not if it requires bi-weekly waxing

That sounds awesome, I'll do a full sealant with Wolfgang's after I fix all the rock chips, minor scratches and paint correction. I'll have to wait until spring to do anything cause it's colder than a witch's tit in upstate NY winters, and also makes me very jelly of all you in Florida, Texas, CA, etc.
