TL type S Maintenance Costs

Hi guys, so I just got my TLS and I was wondering about maintenance since the garage I had been to told me the 3.5 tends to cause more problems than the 3.2.

This is her!!!!

Just wanted to know over the years would you say your maintenance for the type s has been acceptable, very costly or relatively low cost? And also wondering what's your yearly average in maintenance costs?

Bought my car (08 type s) @ 91k about 2 1/2 years ago

Timing belt/water pump
1 drain and fill on trans fluid
All 4 tires/rotors and brakes
Tighten fuel cap message - mexico/japan part
Disconnected Hands Free Link as it was draining battery
New battery
Fluid flush on brakes and power steering
2 engine mounts replaced as the 3rd one is hard to reach...
Purchased a lifetime alignment/balance from firestone since it gets out of alignment really easy.. (If anyone could tell me what possibly that could be from?)

We're sitting at 117k now...

'08 TLS Body Kits?

Hey guys I was just wondering, other than the Ron Jon and the Aspec are there other body kits out there that look amazing on the 08 TL s? I just got mine and I'd like to restore her to her Glory days!!!!

I like the Ron Jon bumper but I don't like the back of it for some reason. And the Aspec it just seems like everyone's got it sooooooo I'm thinking perhaps maybe a combination?!? I don't even know if that's doable but this is my baby:

You guys with body kits I'd like to see what you guys done with yours. !

Don't think the 3.5 has any more issues than the 3.2 does really? It is nearly the same car that you previously owned.

I have had my '05 for 11 years and and 150k miles...now sitting at a total of 185k'ish miles.

Standard Maint:
- new battery
- Front brake pads twice (OE Brembo pads last 40k'ish, then two sets of CMAX)
- Front rotors
- rear pads and calipers
- 105k maint (TB, SP, WP, plugs, valve adj)
- a couple sets of tires (on my fourth set total...EL42, Pilot Sport AS+, Primacy MXM4, PZero AS+)
- alignments
- air filter
- cabin filter
- wiper blades (using 2011 Accord blades)

Repairs and General Stuff:
- blower motor transistor
- hood struts
- O2 sensor
- side engine mount
- battery cable (terminal corroded and broke off)
- trans oil replaced twice with GMSMFM
- driver and passenger mirror actuators
- auto-dim rearview mirror
- side markers
- brake light switch
- driver's power seat adjustment cable (something came loose, repaired by dealer for free)
- emergency brake cable (froze solid one winter, replaced by dealer under warranty)
- radiator cap
- coolant overflow tank cap
- audio amplifier

I think that covers it mostly. I'm sure there are a few things I have forgotten, but for the most part, this has been the most problem free vehicle I have ever owned. Coming up with an annual maintenance cost is nearly impossible here. It really depends on how many miles you drive and how much basic maintenance tasks cost at your local service center...or if you do those yourself. I don't think the scheduled/expected maintenance costs are any different than pretty much any other mainstream car. Change the fluids on a somewhat regular basis, replace an air filter, cabin filter, wiper blades...maybe $200-300 per year??

Whoever told you the 3.5 had more issues than the 3.2 is an unqualified idiot. The fact is the two engines are virtual clones of each other and both have a stellar reputation for longevity.

I'm sure with enough money anything is possible. Those are the two most prevelent. Mixing them would look....weird.

@BLK Pnthr

you seem a bit trigger happy with the new thread button.. Just keep it all in one place.. I merged all your old threads together into one Progress Thread and you can ask all of your question here.

Or better yet, if you do a search, you'll see that any and more likely than not, all of your questions have been asked and answered in the past.

If you want to change the title to something else, let me know.

New 08 TLS Owner From Canada!!!!!!!!

Hey guys im from Ottawa, Ontario in Canada. I previously had an 04 TL and absolutely fell in love with it until the engine died.....so I was looking for another TL I came so close to buying the 3.2 tl in black but after much research I ended up with the pearl white tls. I'm telling you guys from the moment I went to see her the first time I knew she was the car for me!!!!!! She had my name written all over her. The 3 days before I went to pick her up I couldn't sleep all I could think about was picking up my baby WHICH by the way I got at an AWESOME price since these cars here range between 7 to even 10k the max I've seen was 15k for an 08!!!!!!! Anyway after getting behind the wheel OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS BABY. IM never parting from it loooooool. It's a good thing and not a good thing because I have a heavy foot (being a woman lol nobody understands why I'm always driving so fast in a hurry to get somewhere but the truth is I'm Always late everywhere lmaoooo!!)
Anyway I plan to restore this baby to Glory and OF COURSE mods all the way!!!!!!!!!! Lol another thing no one understands but i guess I'm that weird awkward boss chick who likes her ride to be just as fresh!!! Lol the car has to match the owner you see!!!!! Lmaooo !!Especially since she's my twin!

Here's my list:

- get calipers, rotors, brake pads, brake fluid done
-needs new tires at the front since I already replaced the back
-restore them headlights
-tire alignment and rotation along with tie rods
-side view mirrors change and repair the windshield
-oil change check all fluids, engine, trans, brake and coolant
-check spark plugs
-tining belt, timing belt tentionner, serpentine belt, inspect timing belt idler pulley, side motor mount, sepentine belt tentionner, water pump
-fuel filter
-get valves adjusted and cleaned for better MPG
-check and change valve cover gaskets, valve cover grommets, spark plugs seals, lower and upper intake gaskets, throttle body gaskets
-theres a little rust spot I plan to have it removed treated and definitely rust proof the car every year
-demon/angel eyes
-seat covers from endless rpm
-Custom steering wheel endless rpm
-universe ceiling (forgot what it's called)
-redo inside trim
-detail inside car and engine bay
-tint the front windows darker
-Ron Jon rims for summer and keep the current rims for the winter
-RJ body kit
-paint job PEARL WHITE WITH THE CAMELEON EFFECT BLUE
-cold air intake
-larger throttle body
-Exhaust header and manifold
-High flow NON RESONNATEDperformance catback exhaust WITH Jpipe I was thinking XLR8
Catalytic converter as well.

LOOOOOL I think that's it for now!

Here's my babyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

Nice car! I recently got an 08 Accord Coupe with a 3.5L V6 and a 6 speed MT. I too am in love with my car lol. So far I've swapped all bulbs to LEDs, bought an afe power Takeda Intake, and all new brakes w/ drilled and slotted rotors.

It looks pretty sexy lol out of curiosity what is the difference between the drilled and slotted rotors vs ones that are not?

The drilled holes and machined slots help the rotors stay cool while braking.

First off, welcome to Acurazine! There is an endless amount of information here to make your 3G TL-S run optimally. If your new pick-up is a manual, I would suggest you to replace the transmission fluid with AC Delco Synchromesh Friction Modified. It's been raved about on this sub for alleviating poor shifting issues.

Now for some useful information for your future mods. Drilled/slotted rotors heat up faster than blank rotors since there is less mass in a drilled/slotted rotor, which can reduce the life of your brake pads. But drilled/slotted rotors will reject heat into the surrounding air faster than a blank rotor, which is really only ideal for track use. They also serve the purpose of evacuating water away from the braking surface, but realistically, good quality brake pads are not affected significantly by a wet braking surface, and on the street your tires are more of a factor in helping you brake if its wet out.

The one thing they got going for them is that they look cooler (faster) than a blank rotor.

In my opinion, at most I would go for slotted rotors. And if you are going the drilled/slotted route, make sure they come from a reputable manufacturer as drilling/slotting concentrates the stress on the rotors around the drilled holes and slots, which can lead to cracking and warping of the rotors.

Hmmm, two comments:
  1. The drilled and slotted rotors will do nothing to improve your stopping power, but they will eat your brake pads quicker.
  2. The Takeda Hot Air intake will reduce the power of your engine over the stock intake, but it may actually improve your fuel economy a bit (fuel atomizes better in hot air).

judging from your list, your going to
1. hell of a time finding some of those rj body parts
and
2. spend more in mods than what you actually paid for the car

Welcome to the forums.

Since this is a topic/technical issue which has generated many replies and much discussion, this thread has been belatedly moved from the New Member Introductions forum to the model specific forum.

I also noticed the front bumper. Anyways welcome to the forum looks like a nice car. Skip the fancy rotors and get some coated Centric blanks. And you said replace calipers-Im sure they work just fine just paint them if you want them to look better- Enjoy the car

Seconding the Centric blanks. Great performance and price.
If you really want to drop some dollars on brakes, go for XLR8's Big Brake Kit.
