Desert Photo Shoot - Working Links

I was out with the new camera yesterday. Still have not figured out how to use it so I took all the pics on auto. I know, I know... I need to read the manual! Anyway, I live in Arizona which has a spectacular desert landscape. Hopefully you all enjoy.

The blocking the tunnel shot is off-the-chain! I gotta go there someday! How do you like that D40? I have a D80 and I love it! I don't know what lens you are using, but one day if you can, check out that Nikon 18-200mm VR - da bomb! It's the only lens I use, or will use for sometime!

So far I love the D40... At the moment I am only using the 18-55mm lens that I got with the camera. I will be buying a new lens soon though. That 18-200m has great range, which I'm sure you know.

Yea, It's off Tangerine and Thornydale. Right where they blasted through the mountain to put all those new houses. The lots alone start at 1.25 million per acre. It's a great area for pictures. And it's close for me. I live right up the street in Vistoso.

the lens you get should be based on what you plan on using it for...so i'll assume you want something with a zoom on it...

i LOVE the 70-210 lens i've got...it's discontinued (as of 2000), so i bought mine off of ebay from a very reputable seller...it's an awesome lens and is made of solid metal (not the plastic yours and my 18-55 lens is made of)...i would highly recommend it to you as one of the best (or the best) mid-range zoom lens...

here are the three lenses on my (not for awhile) wish list:
1. Nikon 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor (wide angle)
2. Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED (macro)
3. Nikon ED AF Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 D (zoom)

What's your opinion about Sigma lenses? I work with a guy that does prof photography on the side and he tells me that unless you are a true hardcore photographer you can't even tell the difference. What are your thoughts?

Those are some nice photoshoot. When I was at Vegas for the SEMA show. I was tempted to go to Red Rock Canyon to do some photoshoot. But we were damn too tired to trek all they way there. Maybe next time.

Twigglius & Rimz, I love the 18-200mm VR, and here is Ken Rockwell's assessment of it. That 12-24mm ($900+) is on my list for sure, that or a 17-55 ($1200+ ouch)!!! Your pictures are very nice Rimz, what software do you use? I have Photoshop Pro 9.0 CS2 and just bought a book yesterday to help me with understanding it and how to manipulate Raw Images. I'm really just getting my feet wet with DSLR photography, and I want to produce my pics right. So I need all the help I can get.

Twigglius, it's all in the glass man! Unfortunately I splurged recently for car mods and can't afford more than what I have right now (the 18-200mm VR) so I wanted to get something I could roll with for awhile, that could satisfy most of my needs without getting restless (if that's possible). LOL! I have heard tho, that Sigma has some good glass, as an alternative. But I just want the Nikon. I think people often buy the "equivalent mm" in another brand until they can afford the real thing anyway. There are a couple of lenses later that I may get that are cheaper alternatives when my experience grows, but I'm set for now. It's just a good alternative from what I understand...

Here is my baby armed and dangerous with the 18-200mm VR badass! (taken with my P&S Nikon Coolpix 4300):

Heh heh...even my camera is NBP!

i won't buy anything except Nikon lenses...i may not be 'hardcore', but there's a reason Sigma and Tamron lenses are cheaper...i just like knowing the people who made this awesome DSLR (D80) are also making the lenses for it...

i've read a few good reviews on certain Sigma and Tamron lenses, but i've also read about some very unsatisfied customers with those lenses too...

yeah i've read through Ken Rockwell's site numerous times, looking over all his lens reviews...he raves about the 18-200 VR on every page i think...

i also use Photoshop CS2 (9.0.2..not that it matters), but my recent photoshoot (with links in my sig) were mostly done in Photomatix Pro...i think it brings out the color ranges better than PS does...

you can do a lot with manipulating RAW images by messing with contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, exposure, etc...just play with the different settings and get used to what each one does to your image...from there, you can duplicate that image and blend them together different ways to bring out certain parts of your image even more...

I neglected to point out that my software was updated to 9.0.2. I know that Photomatix Pro is used for HDR, so is that why you got to using it? Doesn't CS2 do HDR? I know about the color preference you said, I'm just asking does it have the capability?

yeah Photomatix Pro is used for HDR, but since we can't save 32-bit (HDR) image files as a viewable format, we have to tone-map the image and then are able to save it in an 8 or 16-bit JPEG, TIFF, or PNG format....Photoshop does do HDR...off the top of my head, in PS under the File menu, goto Automate and there should be something about creating an HDR image...

I just looked for one and guess what... NO LUCK, but I'm sure they are a bitch to find. $279 seems like a great price for that lense!
