What to delete first, Mid-Muffler or Resonator?

Good morning guys. I am planning on dropping my car off at a local Exhaust shop and wanted to find out from the Acurazine Community what to delete first? Should I delete the Resonator first and see if I then need to delete the mid muffler or should I delete the mid muffler and then see if I need to delete the resonator?
Basically, I am trying to create a custom exhaust on a budget, but I do want better air-flow. I also don't want a raspy "ricer" exhaust sound, but rather a nice deep Comptech Exhaust sound.
Please let me know what you all think the best item for removal would be first and then go from there.

Nevermind... I am going to go ahead and remove the mid-muffler first. If this isn't the sound I want, then I am going to create a custom exhaust. What do you all think about deleting the resonator completely, running a straight pipe to a single Magnaflow exhaust and then running pipes with "Tips" to the rear? This would eliminate quite a bit of weight and it would be using 1 exhaust rather than resonator/mid-muffler/exhaust 1/exhaust 2... definitely interested in hearing what you all think about this. If someone has this, is there a youtube clip that you can direct me to?

I had the muffler and resonator deleted for about a day, that was raspy as hell!! Custom exhaust sounds nice though.

I removed the mid-muffler and replaced with straight pipe. I also removed the resonator and replaced with a MagnaFlow resonator ($100), left the stock mufflers alone (sometimes referred to stage 3 exhaust on this site)....

Gives it a nice sound definitely not ricey.......

Well, I took off the mid-muffler and I have to say, it isn't as loud as I was hoping, but it definitely sounds good. I like the fact that it is stock sounding when driving normal, but if you give it a little gas it definitely has a nice low note. I am pleased with it. There isn't any problems with drone or anything, which was one thing I was worried about.

Anyhow, next on my list is H&R springs. I really want to go with the B&G's because there is a .2 difference drop in the front from the rear, but I haven't really heard of B&G before. The H&R's have a .1 drop difference in the front from the rear and they have been around for quite a while.

I like the aggressive look, which is why I want the front drop to be more than the rear drop. Tell me what you all think.

I had both mid muffler and resonator out and from 1000 to 1500 rpm it made a reall raspy sound.... and at cold starts its extremely raspy! If anything, just remove ONLY one

I paid $80 for the removal of the mid-muffler and for them to put on a straight pipe with clamp welds that were tac welded in.

Wasn't happy about the cost, but much cheaper than other places I asked.

I just did this like 4 hours ago, i love the way it sounds, it cost me $00000.00 i had some pipe laying around and i simply cut the 3rd muffler out and welded that one in.... But i do have access to a lift, welder, pipe bender,etc.... So you guys might want to go to a shop for this.

It makes the tl sound great, i love the fact that if i put my windows up it is not any louder than before until you step on it that is.... Outside the tl almost sounds like a g35 or lexus sc300.. I know because i have friends that own both.

My exhaust set up is - atlp j pipe, 3rd cat delete, stock resonator, 3rd muffler delete and stock pipes.

while I am sure your exhaust has a little bit different note than mine because of the 3rd cat delete and ATLP J pipe, I agree with your comments about being able to drive without noticing any change within the cabin. To me, it makes the car sound more powerful, because you can't tell that any modification has been done since I still have the same exhaust by the back bumber and stock tips. It sounds like the car truly has high horse power.

I thought about it, but honestly, I really like the fact that it resembles stock when driven normally now and when you give it a little it gets a little louder. I think the next step if anything would be a CAI intake and see what effects that would have on the exhaust system. Which is the best for the 3G?

Yeah, I was quoted $500 to create that custom setup down here in FL, I am sure you would spend a couple hundred dollars in gas to and from to get it done...lol.
When you get it done, you have to send me the audio clips so I can see if I want to do it...!

I just recently picked up my 05 TL, and I will be doing the Mid Muffler delete and was wondering what size pipe I will need to replace it with. And any special tools I might need will be helpful as well, Thanks.

Do not remove the resonator...it sounds horrible. Remove the resonator and the mid muffler and replace the resonator with a Magnaflow or Dynomax. There is another one of my posts to a video link of a before and after clips....

Hey Cucu28,

Did you notice any performance difference with the 3rd cat delete? I got the RV-6 jpipe and it came with a test pipe. I have heard it reduces torque so I havent installed it yet. What are your thoughts? I am debeting removing the mid muff also.

If you search you'll find video clips of the different options.
They're referred to as stages.
Stage 1 is mid muffler removal - not much change
Stage 2 is mid muffler removal and resonator changed for magnaflow resonatory (louder but a bit raspy)
Stage 3 is mid muffler removal and Dynamax resonator taking place of stock resonator (deeper G35 sound and a bit louder)
Stage 4 is taking both out altogether - loudest and raspy.

This is based on memory for when I did my own research. I opted for Stage 3, found the Dynamax for $40 shipped and paid a shop $50 to do the work. Happy as heck and no regrets.

the M3 is raspy, but its a good rasp IMO and suits the car, not to be compared with rasp created by our cars

bump from the dead. I just did it this weekend and hated it. Reversed it after washing my car on the same day.

Whole ordeal cost me $70, but I guess I wouldnt have known if I didnt try.

I think I didnt take into account that the previous owner changed the 2 axle back mufflers to Magnaflows. Removing the mid muffler increased the noise ridiculously in the cabin..i'd say it was a really loud droning bass note. I couldnt shift past 2.5k RPM without the loud bass coming, also engine braking caused a subdued drone. The magnaflows just happen to be tuned to create such a noise I suppose.

Starting her up and revving it sounded kinda cool. On the revs when the RPMs dropped it had that gurgle sound you hear on domestics. But that drone totally killed the entire purpose of the car to me.

Had my mid muffler removed 1 month ago for $80 and i love the sound. You can only hear it between 2.5k-3k. Sounds really good when your getting on it. Installed the DC Sports CAI today and I am very satisfied with the slight gains, sound, and fitment of it and the price ($126 shipped). Next mod will be the RV6 J-Pipe and PCD's. Can anyone tell me which one gives more gains? I will only be able to get one at a time and would like to know which one gives the best gains.

How much of the restriction in the stock cat-back is caused by the mid-muffler?

Zero. The mid-muf is a straight-thru design. There is no performance gain with the mid-muf removal. sound, and very little of that, increase only.
