Vtec controller

So when I searched I found that noone has got one to work with the 3G TL....something about not having a tach signal wire so it engages at idle. Has anyone used an autometer tach adapter? My mustang buddy had the same problem hooking up a tach in an 03 Mach 1...no tach signal wire b/c of the modular motor...could this possibly fix the problem the 3g is having?

vtec controller would be sick for a TL, especially a 3.5

i dont think thats why we cant use it... ive researched this before a while back... i think maybe something with the Drive By Wire??

would be nice.. especially for boosted TL's... you can change the VTEC engage RPM's...so if you drop it from ... (4600~4700 stock) to 3000rpm you can increase low end power and get quicker 60' times and 0-60...

whats the deal w/ the DBW? how does that affect it?

Jammin, when I dyno'd that had the coil wire reader looped around the set wires foe cylinder 1, instead of an actual coil wire on an old ignition system,
but what i get from searching is there isnt a direct coil signal wire sice it has 6 coils so the controller wont get a signal, hence it engauges at idle...IF thats the case the tach adapter should work....im looking into this pretty hard so if theres anymore input from the ones who have tried it i would appriciate it!

It won’t work like that. VTEC switches between two camshaft profiles. One, opening valves lower and shorter, is for low RPM and the other, opening them higher and longer, for high RPM. If you switch between them at lower rpm you will loose power.

so then what do you actually use this controller for? i thought it was for simply choosing when VTEC engages/disengages or longer hold time

You are right, but problem is that you can not choose better moment to engage VTEC than factory already did, unless you change camshafts, intake valves, intake manifold, camshaft gears or so. If you change some of those it could be that ideal switch point is at different RPM. Than this controller would have sense.

Isn't Infiniti's VQ engines basically a form of vtec throughout the RPM range? They are heavily advertising variable lift on their cars. Why can't we implement that with our engines?

I don’t know how that VQ system works, but VTEC has camshafts with two different lobes for low and high RPM (TL only for intake valves). Switching point is inherent to camshaft and the rest of intake system, so unless you change something significant there switching point shouldn’t be changed.
