UR Pulley User Feedback

Hey guys. I know quite a few of you have been using the UR pulley for awhile now and want to know if you've had any problems. Let me know a couple things, like what your driving habits are like, how many miles you've had it on and what kind of problems you've had.

I only ask, because I got mine delivered about two weeks ago and am planning on having the dealer install it for me this coming week. I'm still a little nervous about it messing something up with the engine though. Please give me any feedback you have. Thanks in advance!

As long as you get the UR one that is balanced correctly and it is installed right, you shouldn't have any problems. The only problems I have heard people talking about are a vibration in the shift knob.

If the dealer is willing to install it- along with the new correct belts, then they have the proper tool to hold the engine still while they apply 181 foot pounds of torque
Most probs can be traced to failure to torque to spec

If you get the stock diameter, the stock belts will work, but if you get the smaller pulley, it requires smaller belts as well.

Had it installed 9k ago with stock belt in use. MPG has been consistent but i have had a misfire code with the stock belt. Im not sure if thats the reason why but thats the only thing that has came up. CEL flashes under hard driving.

I got a UR pulley waiting to go in, also....People keep telling me it might be reverse threaded-in (Clockwise to unbolt). This true? Gonna get it pro-installed cuz I don't think my arms can put out 180 ft lbs of torque! just wanna make sure whoever I take it to, knows which way to turn it.

What tool is used on the UR pulley? The tool to hold the stock pulley won't work because the hex shaped insert is not on the new part.

The only solutions I have seen is using the inspection port on an 5AT and 6th gear/friend on the 6MT.

If the dealer is willing to install it are they also still willing to honor the warranty if it does happen to do damage?

I've had mine on since March (over 5K miles so far)... no strange vibrations or any other problems aside from how much of a pain in the ass it was to put on. I posted my initial impressions in another thread but to sum it up power is delivered smoother and a little quicker. It's been on so long now I don't even notice it anymore - sort of like the Comptech Short Shifter. I'm not saying that it's as good a mod as the SS, but I'm happy with the result.

BTW - I went wish the stock sized pulley.

Anyone terribly concerned about damage should simply install a different mod to their car.

This one is fine and helps the car a bit- but at the cost of you losing sleep wondering if 5 years from now............

If the dealer SELLS you a part and installs it, they guarantee it does not affect warranty or the parts maker has a deal to honor warranty thru the dealer for their part

Thats how the dealers can mod so many cars brand new on the lot
and sell it with full warranty

Thanks for all the input guys! I now know that I'm going to have it installed.

I'm gonna call the dealer tomorrow and see what they say about installing it. I'll let you know what comes of it. If the dealer won't do it, I know of another shop in town that works solely on honda/acura cars and specializes in "tuning" NSXs.

If I understand 01tl4tl correctly, he is thinking like I do; dealer warranty's the work, manufacturer warranty's the part.

Oh, by the way, I went with the stock size pulley and wasn't concerned with the belt. From what I was told by UR, the stock belt will work just fine.

Thats the truth- only the underdrive size requires new belt size
Enjoy !

i have been getting the vibrations in the shift knob, usually @ 4500rpms or higher. wasnt sure it was from the pulley until you guys said something. great mod for $200 bucks. not sure if there are really any whp+ gains

The purpose of the underdrive light weight pulley is to free up a few HP lost in turning the AC and other pumps- plus the reduction of spinning mass on the end of the crank-
from 8 pounds down to less than 2!!!
see www.unorthodoxracing.com for tech info
It doesnt increase HP- just releases blocked power already in the engine
and makes car go faster sooner!

Well, unfortunately, I called the dealer today and they said they no longer install aftermarket parts, because they've been burned on it in the past.....that sucks! I'm gonna have to try and find another shop to do it, because I don't have the tools to do it. I have a friend, who's dad might be able to help me out though.....he's got a nice little shop setup.

If the vibration is from the pulley, doesn't that concern you?

Being 4500rpm or higher, that's faster than cruising rpm's, but I would think a pulley inducing vibrations would cause some kind of eventual damage.

The fact that they would do something like that surprised me to begin with. I couldn't imagine the factory flipping the bill for an aftermarket part causing a failure unless it was specifically endorsed by Acura/Honda.

I had the underdriven pulley installed by a shop. I had it on the car for over 5k miles. I have no problems from it so far. Plus, I feel more low end torque.

Is your pulley held on with 181 ft lbs of torque??-
thats the first thing to know for sure- has to be on tight
You can find Acura specialist shops or import sports shops in every town-
look in the yellow pages - a real phone book not the internet
Check parts store parking lots for Hondas and ask the employees where to go
Its easy if you have the right tools and a pain worth paying 60-100 bucks to let a pro do right for you

i had my mechanic do it... i know when he did my TB spacers, he torqued it properly.. i think 18lb/ft... can i just buy a cheap torque wrench to check this? i dont know if he tq'd it right... everything seems to be fine. just a lil driveline vibration in the shifter @ high rpms...

i am only assuming its front the pulley, as mentioned earlier in the post... + its the only mod i have done in the past 2 months, when the vibration starting. i seldom notice it...

Have any of you guys had yours installed at acura specialist shops? There's one that I'm considering going to, but not sure just yet. Any recommendations on what to ask them?

It is not reverse thread. Counterclockwise to loosen, clockwise to tighten. Whoever told you that is probably one of the geniuses who starts all the underdrive pulley rumors of causing engine damage.

Josh - while you are here- what tool do you suggest for installing to the proper torque or at least somwhere close to enough?

If you have a M/T use 6th gear and the brakes. If you have an A/T hold the flex plate in place with a crow bar. There is a special tool to hold it but you can use a crow bar and torque it down with a torque wrench. 181 ft lbs of tq. See the other thread. I explained it there.

I took mine to an "upscale" shop that specializes in Honda's. At first they wanted to charge me something like $180, according to the labor book. I said no way. It is a simple R&R (remove and replace), and it is easy to reach. We agreed on $60. It took just 20 minutes.

i'm confused. is the torque to install the UR pulley 181 ft lbs, the same as the stock one?

i know i saw on this forum a while back that it was something like torque to ~60 ft lbs and then tighten 45 degrees. i've had the pulley sitting in my room the past 6 months lol, i need to head to the shop.

Love mine, I've had it on for about 5k miles. I have a very similar engine so I figured I'd post here. UR will probably go on my next car.

I got installed at a local honda/acura specialist for $75.

wasup

thats the alternate procedure for those without a big torque wrench
Which is worse- finding the right tool or trying to set it by degrees past...
Thats like oil filters!!

This really is a job for shop with a lift. compresor and a couple special honda tools so you dont screw up the flex plate, or over or undertighten the all important pulley bolt!!!
Most shops will charge $60 to $100 for the complete install
Your looking at $60 to buy the right tools not including the torque wrench that goes to 200+ ft lbs

Some things are just a wise investment to have a licensed insured responsible party take care of it for you.
My brakes, oil, spark plugs, wheels- things like that I do myself
Pulley is one to pay someone else
Struts and the spring compressor- my emergency room deductible is higher than the cost of subletting at least that part of that job too!

181 ft lbs of tq is what hte factory recommends and so does UR. Some books may say something like 36 ft lbs of tq and 90 degrees or 60 and 45 degress. Either one is pretty close to 180 ft lbs of tq. I just installed a UR pulley set on an 07 Civic Si yesterday and 36 ft lbs of tq and 75 degrees got me to 181 ft lbs of tq just for reference.
