Tune

Been doing a lot of searching and haven't found much on the Hondata Tune for 07-08 3.2L TL's. Everyone says its well worth $700 but what power gains are you guys getting from it? Ive read 10-20 whp but the posts i saw were referring to the Type-S so I'm wondering if it'll be the same on the 3.2.

Im thinking of pairing it with the XLR8 J Pipe as my first two mods.

You will find 2 very different opinions on this site. Some will say you should do a bunch of mods before you get a Hondata and that it isn't worth the money.

Others will say that it should be your first, or one of your first mods.

I am in the latter group. Having the Hondata first on an unmodded car may not give you an OMG LULZ WTF type of power gain, but it is the foundation upon which everything is needed going forward, and you'll benefit from better driveability overall from a tune.

Depending on your goals with your car, and where you are willing to make compromises with your car in varying ways, you might consider PCDS or HFCs instead of a J pipe for a bigger gain.

Emissions and tolerance to smell and cost all play in on that decision. I'm also assuming you have an 07 Base? If you have an 04-06, you can use the Hondata but you will need an adapter harness ($350) and it will also only work on manual trans cars.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, and yeah i have an 07 Base.
So what exactly will the tune do to a stock TL then? Increase the Vtech boost or?
Cause I've read a lot of other tunes for my old car anyways would just trick the engine into working harder than it should. I know the Hondata isn't like that but what exactly will it do to my engine to increase power?

On my 05, when I dyno'd it, the car ran extremely rich (more fuel than it needs)) at wide open throttle once it was above 5000 rpms. Removing some of that fuel (called leaning it out, since we are making it run lean or leaner than before) will add some power. Overall, you will have better driveability, and in general better performance than a stock tune.

I wouldn't say it makes the engine work harder, it makes the engine work 'smarter' or more correct.

Most of the old 'chips' or tunes like the old 'mugen b16' just ran lots of timing, no rev limiter and were not tweaked for an individual engine combination.

I would not consider the Hondata a 'one and done' purchase. In other words, don't purchase it, and expect that to be it. That is merely the tool to allow you to tune or have someone tune the car. There are a couple different tuners on the forum here that do remote tuning - Dom and Vit. I don't think you'd go wrong with either one of them. The other option is a dyno tune, but your options there become limited by where you live, and I also don't care much for just dyno tuning since it is not a real world load on the engine, like driving around is.

The Hondata will allow you to change the VTEC engagement point, or the RPM that it transitions to VTEC. Doing this allows you to 'smooth' the power delivery. I've seen some cars that have a dip, then a large jump in power at VTEC. That is not an ideal power delivery, but I think some like it so they can feel when "VTEC just kicked in Yo!" Your car will be faster with the smoother delivery though.

This is a great description of what the HONDATA Flashpro will do for you. It will be a great foundation for all of your future mods, and help you get the most from the upgrades you install.

It adjusts ignition, fuel, timing, throttle response and more. It really changes how the car behaves and feels, and makes it smoother as well as more aggressive. It also opens the door for things like bigger injectors and forced induction. We have great sale pricing on the Flashpro, feel free to PM me or send me an email about it Tom@ExceleratePerformance.com

Its worth it considering everything it can do. It might now give you 20-30whp, but it can help with smoothing out the power band and increase gas mileage.

I am currently in the process of having my car tuned right now. All I can say is don't rely on the base map. Actually have the car dyno tuned or etuned.

+1 for FlashPro, I have a CAi,J-pipe and Exhaust and made solid gains in my mind. A tune on this car won't give you crazy gains like a tune on turbo or big V-8's but it will improve power delivery and make the most out of your set-up.

Only Mod RV6 TD exhaust.
