Test Pipe / Cat Delete Questions

Ok, I've been doing some research on bolting on a 3rd CAT test pipe from a Honda Accord 03-05 V6

now, the third cat has no o2 bong, so would a test pipe throw a CEL ? do we think the gains are worth it ? The mod' is fairly cheap, and worth the 5~10 whp gains, but i dont want any CEL's or engine problems

aznbo187... Ryan....blusap... all you exhaust/cat system geniuses... feel free to chime in!!

You're fooling yourself if you think it's gonna give you 10 HP...

There's a few folks that have installed the megan racing test pipe, and all reported no gains. I'm against it, no significant gains in exchange for more pollution. Great.

Search megan and you'll find the threads.

just go with the e-shift cats or drill out your current ones. Adding a test-pipe that far back won't do much for power.

I've had my 3rd cat deleted, and I didn't feel that the top end gain in exchange for the low-end loss was justified.

But from a performance perspective, you can't just change out parts of the exhaust "system" and expect a significant gain. The entire system works as "one" unit to help extract waste and improve exhaust flow velocity.

My advice would be to get the j-pipe with a higher flowing cat. This way you are not just mix-matching items here and there, while also still staying legal.

As I've posted before, I've had the car tested and it passed just fine with no third cat. With that being said, why not just gut the stock one for free? No CEL because there's no 02 sensors back there. As for gains, I couldn't tell a difference but that means nothing. I've gutted the cats on a friend's supercharged truck and it actually felt slower but was .2 seconds and 3mph faster at the track. With the restrictive mufflers and especially with the other two cats, I doubt you would have to worry about low end loss at all as there's plenty of restriction.

probably not worth it, but the Megan Test pipe was $90, so i thought it might be worth a shot.. maybe ill purchase it, do a pre and post dyno to see some real results/#'s

i feel like you would lose power to, mainly due to the lack of back pressure

You still have two cats upstream, a few mufflers, and a resonator. You're not going to be lacking backpressure.

no sensors on the 3rd cat = no CEL.

i agree, 10whp is out of the question. with a stock exhaust and front cats, deleting the 3rd one will give you 3-4whp tops. that was one of my first mods when i first bought my accord and it will give a slighty deeper tone too.

as for more pollution, i have to disagree. i gaurantee it will still pass smog in any state with the 3rd cat deleted, but it wont pass visual. most places here in cali dont even bother to look underneath the car anyways. the 3rd cat is only there to pick up whatever passes through the front two, which isnt much IMO.

so, blusap... what do you think about the Megan test pipe with the ATLP exhaust and stock 2 primary cats.... ? i dont want the car to get tooo much louder, as my car is a beast already.. but i wouldnt mind a slight hp kick... hoping for about 5.. but after reading other members posts and input, i feel like it would lose power.. especially on the low end..

fyi, the ATLP exhaust has no resonater or mid-muffler

$90.. I wouldn't pay $90 for it

My price cutting ass can get it for under $50 shipped..

As for gains... I think with the procats it would work using the megan testpipe

Definitely would be worth a couple ponies... I am going to order one so when I do join black on the dyno pulls we can tell if in fact it does gain something

My opinion would be a e 2hp gain with like 4lbs tq

so ATLP is straight through from the 3rd cat to the mufflers?? didnt now that. it must be pretty loud then already.... still, i dont think the megan test pipe will make it that much louder. it will just make the tone sound deeper

I agree.

Blackura, with mine i actually felt more low end. I chirped coming out of 1st without trying right after installation. Car felt more 'torqe-ish' w/e i step on it just halfthrottle. It barely smells, no worse than an american car does, if anything its just at startup.

Also this mod gave my exhaust a slight gurgle sound, just as smoothe as a VW VR6 engine with a GHL exhaust.

blusap, whats your setup going to be while the cats are away.... ? I can only imagine that you have been losing power while the pro-cat was busted up.

Theres been so much talk about new j-pipes, that HART test pipe/cat delete, aznbo187's j-pipe ... i dunno what to do!

i might just try the megan test pipe and a do pre/post dyno on the same day. maybe we'll see some gains

i will keep you all posted
