SPEC CLUTCH stage 2+ *pics*

I got my spec clutch kit today, but still haven't recieved my replacement friction surface for the comptech cl-s flywheel that I am using. I'l update as I go along, but for now I have to wait for that piece.

Here's pics of the spec 'stage 2 plus' kit-

Is the comptech flywheel the same as the stock TL piece with the sprung friction surface or is it a solid unit with a replaceable friction surface? I would imagine so since there isnt a sprung disc in the spec kit and there would be plenty of chatter and harsh engagement with out it. Also are you using the factory tools to install the pressure plate? if so where are you getting/borrowing them from? Good luck hope it all works out cause ill be the next to get one!!!

I can't speak for the late model TL 6spd, but the stock CL's flywheel is dual mass with an unsprung disk. I would imagine the TL is the same design since the 04 TL 6spd shares the same part number for the pressure plate as the CL's. The comptech aluminum flywheel for the CL is solid and the disk they provide is sprung.

If his flywheel from comptech is solid which I'd guess it is, He should not install that disk shown above and return it for a sprung one. If Spec does not make a sprung disk for it, Competition Clutch has one readliy available as I'm ordering one on Monday. Sad to say, my clutch is toast.

I hope this works out for you, however, i'm still a skeptic. When you compare the stock one to the one above, check every detail closely, rivots, markings on the rivots, everything. Also, why don't you call spec and ask what the clamping force is on that unit. I have had a stock one checked by competition clutch and it comes in at 2400lbs clamping force give or take a few.

Thanks for posting up the pics and keep us posted.

Thinjim, you are correct that the clutch kits (clutch disc and pressure plate) are the same for the 03 CLS and 04-06 TL. The flywheel however are different part numbers but i believe are the same design. I found the comptech flywheel and you are correct there in that the flywheel is solid (and not compatible with the STOCK STYLE clutch kit for the TL or CLS since they are an unsprung disc) and that they include a sprung disc to be used with the stock pressure plate. Sorry joes05tl, but if you intend on using that spec set up with the unsprung disc and solid comptech flywheel you are going to feel what it is like to drive a race car clutch set up that has no sprung hub to absorb the shock when releasing the clutch. I suggest using a stock flywheel with that clutch set up or have them build you a sprung hub disc (should be readily avalible) to use with the comptech flywheel.

Good info ThinJim and Ryan. Quick question ThinJim though, you mentioned something about Competition Clutch and purchasing something from them. Have they released anything yet?

Yes, I hope this works because I know most of us '04 6MT's are fast approaching the end of our clutches.

Hahah.. what item? Must have been something from Snap On b/c that's the only thing I've bought recently.

it was a torque wrench, i was the the bidder srat... you'll see me.

Question for you or anyone. I've looked at snap on tools for a pressure plate compressor, the one needed to change out our clutch, and can't seem to find one. I'm going to tackle this myself and would rather spend the money I'd spend to pay someone to do it and buy the tool. any suggestions?

Sh!t- Why can't anything go smoothly? So what will happen if I put in this pressure plate and clutch disk with the ct flywheel? Will it work, but just be rough to engage, or what? Will it last at least 30,000 miles like this?

The engagement will be very harsh, it will put tremendous stress on your motor mounts and other problems that i can't figure. your car is not made for that setup, it will work, but it's better to just get ahold of spec and get the sprung disk. i'm sure they will work with you.

I would say the disk you have would do great, you just need it to be sprung to absorb the shock. You know what a sprung disk is, right? Looks like this, see the springs in the center hub of the disk?

yeah, I know what a sprung hub is- Return shipping on my piece was 30 bucks for 3 day, and they charged me 30 bucks to send out the new one (3 day), Luckily the disks cost the same, so 60 bucks and another week till I have the one I want. Thanks for catching this, guys!

Doing it yourself, your crazy!!! I don't have access to a lift and my 80 psi max compressor isn't up to the job. It would take me 3 weeks @ 2-3 hrs a day, to much for me. I know a place, 'whitfield racing' they are honda/acura specialists. They quoted me $500.00, way worth it-

Holy Sh!t guys, look at my old factory pressure plate. It's got all kinds of pieces broken off. Suprisingly, the comptech clutch disk and flywheel held up fine. Spec stage 2+ kit is in. First impression; wtf- Its hard to get used to, kinda have to drive it like a 2-stroke bike. Low rpm engagement is hard to do, cuz once it grabs, it grabs! Usually stalls out w/out some rpms. Pedal feels great. Almost shorter maybe, and springier too? It's still too new to tell. I will definitely give a good long write up after my 120 day warranty for parts and 90 day for install is up. We'll see-

Anyway, heres my old stuff.

See the pieces of pressure plate that got stabbed into the clutch disk in the last pic!?! I can't pull them out, w/out tools. Crazy-

wow, seems like nobody cares! Any how, clutch has about 300 miles on it and is a lot more user friendly. Maybe im just getting used to it, but i like the differences so far.

Nice, I'm glad to hear that there's something out there besides the OEM setup. Could you possibly make a list w/ a breakdown of the parts you used?

i'm interested too in your report. I do have a question. were you able to compare closely the pressure plates and there construction? did the fingers on the pp look beefier compared to the stock one?

It takes about 500 miles for a break in on a clutch, don't go crazy on it till then or you'll just have to replace it sooner.

good job.

yeah, each one was a little bit wider than the stock. Call up spec. Still having fun getting used to it. 300 miles on it now- but half of it is freeway. I'll probably 'break-in' till about 900 miles.

Congrats, this has been in the works for a while.

If you have some time, a parts breakdown would be nice. Keep us posted on the drivability and clutch feel as it breaks in.

parts breakdown:

Spec 'stage two plus' kit includes pressure plate, clutch friction disk, throwout bearing, alignment tool, and stickers and instructions. Also warranty card for 120 days, valid if purchased through 'authorized dealer'.

Still needed for completion is a flywheel, I am using the comptech cl-s lightweight flywheel, with a fresh 'friction surface ring' in it. Stock on will also work. The pictures of the 'old' clutch disk is a comptech disk. It held up great, but I think I had a shitty install done, cuz' the pressure plate looks like it got shot by 3" #8 birdshot shells!
Starting to feel normal w/ almost 400 miles. Or maybe im just used to it now. Love the aggressive bite it has even when shifting smoothly.

Update-
Got 800 miles on it now. Feels awesome. Very positive engagement feel. Pedal feels damn near stock, however grab is very hard. You can feel exactly when everything clamps together, even in 4, 5 & 6th gear. Shutter is only there taking off from a stop if the rpms are too low, otherwise i can take off very smoothly. I already have it down pretty good, took my girl around the other day and she couldn't tell a thing. With a little more shifting care, you can make it feel just like stock. I wanna do a long term follow up on this product, so I'll post again, probably around 3,000 miles. Any Q's, shoot away-
