Short ram intake?!?! pros/cons

I just bought a Fujita CAI and have been toying with the idea of cutting it down basicly 75% and leaving the filter right near the battery. What are the pros and cons of doing somthing like this, has anyone done it, etc...thanks

Unless you make a heatshield your intake is going to be sucking in all that hot air in the engine bay.

even with a heat shield youll be sucking in hot air. Unless you duct fresh air toward the short ram intake, I wouldnt do it.

if you want a SAI just buy one like a K&N typhoon, doesn't make sense to me to buy a full size CAI and cut it down

No pros unless you consider noise a pro.

A few cons such as inferior filtration and reduced power due to the hot air.

You're effectively spending money on something that will lower your power and let more dirt in.

Go with a CAI or save your money.

Why do you want a short ram anyways? Is it to protect from water or just different look?

I think one thread a day on the same topic is more than enough...

I think the play into HAI is too strong.. I think the SRI is fine.. For most people.. the slight performance gain & intake whistle is good enough. Initial losses due to warmer air in the intake is not that great and will decrease dramatically once the car starts moving. There are many aftermarket filters that perform very well and will increase hp over the stock ice box.

From what I've read about intake temps.. the difference while driving is about 8-10C (35-50F) warmer for the SRI. If we calculate the the actual pressure change we'd see this difference:

Example

27C [80F] Outside Ambient Temp
38C [100F] CAI Temp
49C [120F] SRI Temp

..11C difference..
The pressure ratio difference is 311/322 = 96.6%

So the air the CAI is breathing is roughly 3-5% denser.. Or a simpler way to think of it is running in 50F temps versus 70F temps. With that in mind, I believe the most important thing to focus on is using a proven filter to keep dirt and foreign material out while providing exceptional airflow rather than whether you're running a CAI or SRI. A bonus for drawing in warmer air is that the reduced intake pressure actually improves fuel efficiency.. so if you're a traffic commuter.. the SRI might be the way to go.

Personally.. I'd rather protect the engine than risk it to squeeze a few extra hp out of my DD.

If thats the case, then you would want to keep the stock filter on there. The aftermarket 'High flow' filters do not offer the same filtration level as the OEM filter.

Only some cars ive seen are good with short rams, but the ppl that do it to make thier v8's sound louder. But cai's will always be better.

I wouldn't mind but I bought the TL used and the previous owner has an aftermarket filter.. scrapped the ice box. I saw a decent review for apexi filters.. I'm not sure about the validity of it but it might be worth it.. I'm waiting to see some numbers on the secret weapon too.. for now.. I try to clean the filter regularly.. doing a couple of mods that might improve the system to my liking / filtration / performance.

There are certain times a short ram has it's place but not on a TL. I run the equivilent to a short ram on my Buick but there's good reason. I found the CAI brought restriction to unacceptable levels even with 4" piping (which makes the turbo heat the air more) so I really have no choice. On top of that it pulls in enough fresh air to the engine bay when I floor it that I see temps go from 120ish down to ambient.

The TL doesn't pull enough air to justify a short ram, not even close.

lol.. from 120 to Ambient.. I believe it.. I'm surprised the pressure doesn't jump higher with that much pull.

I believe it's 1,100 to 1,200 CFM at full tilt. It was making my 9" K&N cone filter collapse on itself so I went with the 14" lol.

It would be interesting to see if the underhood temps change at all on the TL when WOT with a short ram. My guess is there will be no change.

Good point H8 Cars. On a shortened intake, the temp can't change more than 1 or 2 degrees, if at all, and this isn't NASCAR. Location of the CAI is the whole point, and a short ram only works if there's some air to ram into it, which is a moot point on a TL. Am jealous of your GN.

Bit of an old post but I didnt want to start a new one and then get yelled at to search so, just wanted to chime in with what i found after doing a little custom HAI on my TL.

All i really did was take an AEM dryflow filter that i used to use on my Integra's SRI and clamp it to the end of the rubber hose that connected to the air box.

Here is what i found: The filter i used was probably wayyy too small and was probably choaking my engine, The sound is very nice but i noticed an almost extreme throttle response loss, it almost felt like i was in second when accelerating in 1st gear

This was all probably affected by the fact that my filter was wayyy too small but all in all i can say, Dont do a SRI, the stock setup alone is a lot better than it. Get a K&N drop in filter if you want to get something, or CAI. The TL is not SRI Friendly, period.

Why not go with the K&N CAI. It is designed to be used as both a short ram intake or a full CAI.
