Resonated or Non-Resonated, that is the question

Hello all, i'm gettin ready to purchase the ATLP quad setup for my 04 base A/T and i'm curious about the need for a resonator or not. Still running all factory converters and j-pipe. I plan on adding a j-pipe in the future. I'm just a little concerned if there will be alot of rasp with the non resonated version. any insight from the A/T owners would be great.

well, I have the ATLP base non-resonated on my 06 AT and I don't have any complaints regarding rasp. the rest of my exhaust is stock components like yours will be also.

Do you plan to get PCD later? If yes, then for-sure get the resonated version.

You can go to YouTube and listen to difference noises yourself. I personally prefer Dynomax, whether just as an replacement for the stock exhaust or as an extra to cat-back/test pipes. However, it seems the majority of car enthusiasts don't give a [beep] about it. You don't really see people very much into resonators in Evo/STI forums.

Stick to non-resonated it sounds better.
This holds true even if you decide to upgrade the rest of your exhaust components.

Worst comes to worst you can always add a resonator if you think its loud for you.

The non-resonated version looks to be the winner.

Throaty is the goal, i'm just very analytical in these decisions. I went ahead with the Non-res version. I'm excited to get this installed.

I got my ATLP cat-back first as well and picked up the Jpipe shortly after.

I find that it has a nice rumble on idle and the perfect tone while cruising around.
When you step on it is really when it sounds like you've unleashed a caged animal.

I will try to post a video in my thread within the week for those interested in the non-resonated ATLP setup.

Thelak, do you have PCD's ? I am assuming you have the HFC's which come stock with your Type S....with PCD's the caged animal will start carrying a little rasp at certain RPM's....but you will gain some power as well, so its a healthy trade off if you ask me

resonated is going to sound the best when you change the jpipe and pcd's, non resonated will probably sound better while the rest is stock

You have no idea how much this saved me time and money! I too just bought the ATLP Quads/w race pipe ( http://tiny.cc/4dtl5) for my 08 Type S and finally decided on the non resonated version. I just have one question that no one has been able to answer! Will my AEM CAI and Cat-back ATLP exhaust overpower my stock ecu? If so any advice on how to keep it in check? Money is no issue in my case! Thanks!

I have ATLP V2 J-pipe, ATLP Race Pipe, and non-resonated ATLP Base Exhaust and I abolutely love it. I wouldn't change a thing.

If you go to YouTube and type in my username, you'll find some videos of my exhaust. Most of them are before the j-pipe and race pipe were installed but you'll get a general idea.

I decided on non-resonated because if I was spending that much $ on the exhaust set-up, I wanted to make sure I could hear it. Plus you can always add a resonator later down the road.

I have the stock HFC (600 cell) w/ the Type-S but RV6 HFC (200 cell) is coming in soon.
I can already feel the difference right now compared to my UA6.
The car revs soo much more freely and faster than before.

Thats the same logic I used when opting for the non-resonated version.
From what I have read and heard having the HFC vs PCD should also minimize any potential rasp as well in addition to not having the smell.

Mind you I come from a motorcycle background so it wouldn't bother me just the law doesn't take too kindly to modded vehicles in general.
I will be making some video's to illustrate my setup once it arrives and to test out my new camera as well.

The Stock ECU is adaptive so all you need to do is Reset it post install.
There is a procedure to do this without disconnecting your batter that I have used numerous times already.
The ECU will make the adjustments based on your driving characteristics.

If money is not an issue the JnR ECU will run you about $1400 and give you the best bang for your buck performance wise.

The ECU "kinda" adjust the AFR/timing depending on the mods....

I completely agree with Tmax, reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes but remember to note down your Radio/Navi codes else they will not start up

Yep 6MT FTW.
I also notice now that I can appreciate the exhaust note while downshifting now.

ECU hopefully by summer time

I have had the HFPC and the non-resonated ATLP exhaust and there is no rasp at all. Then I installed the RV6 J-Pipe and then the rasp started...

If you are planning to get the RV6 v3 J-pipe and/or the PCD get the resonated version.
