Arrow Raspy:(

Ok guys, I know I ask alot of questions but I need feedback one more time . So basically I have a XLR8 J PIPE N CATBACK NON RES QUAD and it was set up with a stock 3rd cat and sounded sweet. Recently I put in a rv6 3rd cat delete. Now DONT GET ME WRONG I am not putting down any of the products but after deleting the 3rd cat I get such a nasty, digusting, civic sounding, tin cans vibrating UGLY NOISE from 4100 RPM through 5000 RPM sometimes even all the way until about 6000 RPM. This is my first exhaust so forgive me if this is a stupid question but is that supposed to happen? Is this because the 3rd cat may have no be bolted right or something is wrong. Does anybody else have this same problem. I mean its really bothering me considering I take my RPMS pretty high and a tl s sounding like a 92 hatchback civic makes me want to pull over and slap myself! Somebody please give me some feedback it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks GUYS ! or and GIRLS!

did u put in an rv6 test pipe or race pipe? the resonated test pipe shouldn't be as raspy as a race pipe so it sounds like u have the race pipe, although both will be louder than having a cat in there. obviously putting the 3rd cat back in takes away the rasp and a a hi-flow 3rd cat replacement will too, although they are more expensive.

Sounds like the race pipe is your prob, although I am a newb I've read some of the same things with race pipes. A lot of people want that sound and do the race pipes for that reason, even though "race" pipes don't gain much over the test pipes.

sounds normal..if u want to kill the rasp I would suggest u get a test pipe(resonated) or high flow cat. Or even a resonator if u have to

technically it is, since your running pretty much a straight pipe exhaust after the pre cats. people just change different parts because they dont like the rasp

I installed an Aero resonator and my rasp went away. I put on a HFC thinking it would get rid of some rasp, but didn't help at all.

its weird cause my setup is the least restrictive, pretty much straight pipe the entire way and i have no rasp, unless i am revving, then it rasps

Rasp with your setup is normal.

I used to have: ATLP J-Pipe > GReddy Evo II.
Now, I have: ATLP J-Pipe > ATLP Race Pipe > GReddy Evo II. Along with this setup, I also got noticeable rasp, but not enough to complain about.

So, OP, it's normal for you to be experiencing rasp. To get rid of it, put your stock 3rd cat back in.

You may want to take some time to read through the threads to gain a better understanding and learn from others experience...unless you have unlimited time and funds. Just a thought.

You may want to consider a high flow cat instead of putting the OEM 3rd cat back in line. I believe that would allow you to maintain the 2-1/2" dia. throughout the exhaust system instead of tapering it down to 2-1/4 through the OEM cat. Disclaimer: This only holds true if the OEM cat is 2 1/4" dia. I am not sure of the OEM cat pipe diameter.

Remember the exhaust flow is only as good as the most restrictive section (diameter).

So before I get rid of this thread, just to confirm the raspy noise ( civic like loud tin can sounding ugly sketchy unclear and confused vtech noise ) is from the str8 pipe and is normal with a set up like mine ? gosh if somebody with a similiar set up pitched in and told me he or she gets the same noise it would really make me feel so much better

That's weird, I've got the stock primary cats, RV6 j-pipe, RV6 race pipe, and ATLP quads with absolutely ZERO rasp, both when revving in neutral and while driving hard.

I'm guessing that excelerate's products are raspier than ATLP.

if u dont want to put back the stock CAT than u should add a resonator.. that always works for raspy sounds

The raspiness occurred after he installed the 3rd cat delete. It is the cat deletes that make the tone more raspy and tinny sounding, not the exhaust or j-pipe.

resonator replaces mid-muffler, correct? If so, does this mean you'll need some torch work done to a full catback system?

so, could you hang a typical cat back system yourself from a test pipe or stock 3rd cat? I realize it might need a little tweaking, but I've been wondering about this.

yes u can.

Like the ATLP or XLR8 cat system it is a simple bolt on.

If u do custom work like a 2 1/2" piping and adding a resonator that would have some welding involved gotta do that at a shop unless u can do it urself lol

Is it safe to say adding a J-pipe to an aftermarket cat back exhaust system will not affect the sound? Please assume factory cats remain in place.

here's your answer right here op...

I installed the atlp hiflow cat on wanderer's ride, he thought he'd kill the rasp right then and there... it sounded EXACTLY the same... although he does have the precat deletes... which will be slightly more raspier than what you have now

if you want that deep tone you had on your xlr8 catback... simply pickup an aero ar25 resonator... should not run you more than $50 shipped... throw it on after racepipe and voila... it'll make your tone nice and sexy once again...

ps. I don't think this thread was required you could've posted this in the many testpipe racepipe 3rd cat related threads on here

The j-pipe will only make the exhaust sound a touch deeper/louder. There are no resonators/cats/etc in the j-pipe so the effect on the exhaust note will be negligible.
