A quiet commuter to Rumbling Speed Demon
I was thinking about this a few days ago. Has anyone ever tried installing a muffler bypass exhaust valve? A quite commuter turns into a rumbling speed demon at the flick of a button?

Basically a exhaust cut out. They make electronic ones now but I personally wouldnt recommend it. On these little V6's they are just not going to sound good and your not going to see any performance gains from doing it either.

I am running an electric exhaust cut out. I love the extra rumble and the sound is one of the few things sports cars respond to. It also helps the turbo spool faster, but I use it for noise and intimidation. Even idle sounds good.

I believe Maserati has this as a factory option on some models.
@ Highspeed, do you have an aftermarket exhaust (I'm guessing so with the FI) and was this an expensive install for the cutouts?

A cutout is cheap. $100 for a decent electric one. $20 for a cheap electric one. The same or less for a manual one. You should be able to find a welder for about $100 to do the install. Many factory cars have some form of cutout for full throttle. The first I remember was the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4. I don't remember if it was fully uncorked or if it just switched to a less restrictive muffler. I believe the ZR1 uses it and several others.

I do have an aftermarket exhaust ( ATLP Quads ) and the install was not bad. I did have to have it welded to tabs. It can go where the 3rd cat is for a NA TL, or right off the end of the J-pipe. I think the cutout itself was about $150. My thinking was with the turbo, the least restricted exhaust path would be best, when looking for the most power. I use it for the nascar like sound and raspy feel that eludes to the cars true nature. You can hear the turbo whisle and speed at which the rpms are rising.

I'm planning on adding one too. I've got to cut my downtube and start the bend a little sooner so the exhaust sits higher now that I've dropped it.
Going all stainless this time with Magnaflow mufflers.

I have the same issue, I scrape at stock height over speed bumps. I would love to throw my coils on but the piping hangs too low.

I'll post up pics in my thread.
