supposedly their metallic, but it seemed more like a metal/ceramic combo to me. some parts of it seemed very hard like metal and the other parts just crumbled to dust with the slightest touch, wierd.

you can actually see parts of it where it couldnt take the heat and fused together. bottomline, they just werent designed to be that close to the engine.

thats exactly how mine started off. have you took off the 3rd cat lately? chances are its semi clogged with little metal shrapnel pieces. im sure mine are worse from being supcharged and putting them through the abuse of getting my car tuned all those times.

I am going to have a close look at mine when I install the atlp jpipe this friday... Hope they haven't been destroyed

when I removed the oem jpipe yesterday to install the atlp jpipe, I saw like 1 small tiny finger nail sized spec...

don't think that will lead to any problems soon, the substrate on my primaries was very tight....

Well hate to bring an old thread back, but my cats are deteriorating as well. I found some shrapnel-like metal when I was switching out my j-pipe. They were all in my stock j-pipe and the 3rd cat. I did look up in the forward cats, but they did not show any signs of wear.

another set of procats bites the dust

did you poke at them with something to see if they were loose inside? what happens is they start deteriorating from the outside in. they should be ok for a little while, but its a good idea to run a test pipe or something straight through so the shrapnel blows out the back and doesnt clog up the 3rd cat.

if i were you, either buy richies deletes, now that their junk or get an airgun and hollow them out like i did. you dont want any of that stuff to get inside your mufflers, especially if you have an expensive catback like comptechs.

I did, but it wasn't loose or anything. I think it's just starting to deteriorate. I also have a test pipe on as well, but the stock exhaust. Do you think it will be a problem with the stock muffler? I think I'm going to invest in the TL-S cats. I need some sort of emission control.

i ran the test pipe myself, but reinstalled my 3rd procat when i hollowed the primaries. car doesnt smell one bit.

IMO, those little thin pieces of metal cant be good for any muffler, even stock.

My 3rd Pro cat is like new, except for exterior color change due to oxidation.
The "net" inside is still intact. I will post pics as soon as I upload them.
The E-shift Procats were installed in July, 2006. I do about 12k a year.

OK, so I guess there was nothing stuck in the 3rd cat? no bits or pieces of cat substrate?

I looked at a member's procats the other day and noticed something interesting. Metal cats are made by winding up a corrugated metal sheet with a flat one, which is out that concentric pattern is formed rather than the square cells you see in ceramic cats.

Well one of the procats was concentric with a good pattern followed from the center to the outside. This was normal.

The other one had some sort of an issue where the corrugation was bad and the pattern created was irregular and messed up. This could lead to problems with strength and longevity, in addition to a variance in flow versus the other cat.

I mentioned it before and I will again. These procats are made with cheap substrate. That is why some people have problems here. Not all the cats are going to be bad, but plenty are. The inconsistency is classic "made in china."
