Porting and Polishing

I’m looking for some advice on porting and polishing. I’ve got an AT 07 Type S. What all can I port and polish?

I’m just lost looking at all the post naming different stuff and I’m confused on what parts you can port and polish. I’ve got the bolt ons cai, jpipe, pcds, xlr8 quads. To me it looks like you can do the lower runners, Intake Runners, is there more?

Do you port and polish the manifold also? What about the throttle body? I also know I will change the Mani gasket it looks like there have been some quality issues with p2r.

Do I need to change the throttle body or get a spacer or can I stick with my 3.5 throttle body? What should I do here to get the best results?

Thanks!

No idea on the spacer for the TB.
Gasket match everything from the TB outlet all the way to your exhaust inlet then polish everything as well.

If you have the P2R manifold gasket definitely remove it ! I took out mine and it was melted just enough to cause a vacuum leak..

Thing you can port:

- Intake manifold (the opening, the inside, the lower ports connecting to the runners, etc)
- Heads (more $$ and a lot of options)
- Throttle body (usually called 'boring')
- Lower runners (attaches the lower part of the intake manifold to the heads & unless you are porting the heads as well, you only want to port the manifold side)

As R Parker said, port matching is important and will improve flow, increasing power. In terms of polishing, I can't answer that because I don't really know.

Porting and polishing typically refers to the heads. That's where the power is at. Porting is actually removing material and enlarging but just as importantly reshaping. The bowl or valve pocket area is usually the most beneficial, that's where you'll usually get the best bang for the buck. I learned the hard way when I started porting my own heads that bigger isn't always better and the shape matters a lot. The short side radius is usually polished but very little material is removed. I learned the hard way that removing material in this area will actually hurt power.

You're safe doing what the others have said. Gasket match everything, every joint from the throttlebody to the lower intake to heads. Having a "ledge" anywhere hurts flow more than you think. Polishing won't hurt anything. I wouldn't get too into actual porting of the runners unless you have a good understanding of porting and airflow.

You used to be able to get huge gains from doing the whole intake tract and heads. Nowdays the factory stuff is so good you can get gains but they will be nowhere near what you used to be able to get.
