OEM Cam = Roller lifters

Does my '06 TL have roller lifters (to clarify, I am NOT asking about roller rockers) ?
Thanks

Overhead cam engines generally do not have lifters, though it's not uncommon for a manufacturer to make use of hydraulic lifters to avoid having to do periodic valve settings. Overhead engines do not have rocker arms either. They have followers which can have rollers on the cam side. I'm not sure if our engines have this, but I will check in my service manual when I get home unless someone else answers your question.

Ok, I checked in my Service Manual and Honda/Acura indeed uses rocker arms, does not make use of lifters, and their rocker arms do have rollers for the cam lobes. So there you have it.

SouthernBoy,

THANK YOU

I found this illustration. Does this accurately represent real-life ? In the drawing, I can see the roller-tips on the rocker arms that you mentioned. Does this accurately represent real-life ?

question, (i am a big nub), how many over head cams does a tl have? if 2, would our car be considered to have Dual Overhead Cams (dohc)?

The TL is single overhead cam (SOHC), I believe only the i-VTEC motors are DOHC.

it does have 2 camshafts, but only one per head, not two per head. If it was dohc, our car would actually have 4 camshafts.

It's a reasonable depiction of how the VTEC system in our engines operates, sufficient enough for you to get an understanding. In the past, Honda has used a hydraulically operated piston in the camshaft to introduce the higher lift, longer duration lobe under aggressive engine demands. I'm not certain if our Acura engines have this same design, but I strong suspect they do.

The whole idea of VTEC is to tune a camshaft's timing, lift, and duration based upon real time demands. No camshaft profile can offer the perfect combination of low-end response, smoothness, and economy with upper RPM cylinder filling and purging. This is why VTEC was invented.. to enable small to mid-sized normally aspired engines to produce more and better available power over a much wider RPM range.

At lower engine speeds (RPMs), the fuel-air mix is moving fine and doing a decent job of filling the cylinders. But as demand (and RPMs) increases, a camshaft tuned for lower RPM operation will suffer because volumetric efficiency will drop and therefore the engine will feel as though its running out of breath. You need a camshaft with timing to start opening the intake valve earlier, a higher lift to maintain intake velocity, and a longer duration (which also equates to valve overlap) to more completely flush the cylinders of burnt fuel and fill them with a fresh charge. One camshaft profile cannot do this job as well as multiple camshafts or even better, a variable operating camshaft (VTEC).

Hope this answers your questions.

no, i agree that 260 hp is impressive for a 3.2, but i know think it could be better with dohc. better torque.
