if I have a vibration at idle now, would that be amplified by firmer mounts? or is the vibration from potentially f'd mounts?

more than likely you have broken mounts. when i just had the front and rear in, i had a slight vibration, because of the broken side mount. thats why i said the side mount was the missing link that whole time. it made my car that much smoother

you can place the jack anywhere really. the shop that did mine put a block of wood and did it from the oil pan. all your doing is lifting the weight of the engine so you wont hurt anything.
