Exhaust Pros please advice on the setup!

Hi guys,

Its now time for me for a small performance upgrade. My knowledge on exhaust is somehow limited and since I'm going for a custom made, I need some good advice on the best parts I should be ordering.

Here's the setup so far:

1- Ordered and received my XLR8 J-Pipe (which look very good )
2- Removing the 3rd Cat
3- Magnaflow 18' Resonator #10416 ?
4- Mufflers ?
5- 2.5 Piping from J-Pipe to Resonator / from Resonator to muffler

RESONATOR
Ive been reading the threads and the Magnaflow 10416 Resonator seems like the best way to go for custom exhaust. Seems like it will help to eliminate the rasp or drone, if there's any... Which other part could do the same job as the Magnaflow?

MUFFLER
There's not very much information on mufflers, excepting the complete setup by ATLP or RV6... I was looking at the Vibrant catalog and couldn't really know what will be the best for my setup. Can someone point me a specific model for our TL ?

I really want to get a good sound with the exhaust even if I say goodbye to some tiny power along the road. Please be easy on me as I'm really new with performance mods

Thanks for any advice!

i'd go with the magnaflow 10426 resonator. it's a bit larger and will assure no rasp/minimal drone.

Like I tell everyone looking for an exhaust, are you gonna do the precat deletes in the future? If so, either get a HUGE resonator now, or, if you get a small one, be prepared to get another one in the future. You could honestly run a very large reso under the car and have no mufflers and probably still be pretty quiet as long as your primary cats are in place. But I would advise going with a small(er) resonator now, then getting a larger one in the future if you plan on deleting the cats.

I'd suggest 3in piping, but not many people are open to this suggestion. So if you want to do 2.5in, go for it. The 10416 or 10426 are both 4in round mufflers. A rectangular muffler will deaden the sound better because there is more absorption material (according to Magnaflow). Going with a 5x8x14in rectangular resonator will be more effective than a 4in round 14in muffler.

I'd suggest a 12216 or 12246 for the reso, then 2 14315s for the mufflers at the end. But then again, do you want it loud? I'm assuming drone free, which the 12246 would be better for. You could even get a larger reso (for 0 cabin noise) and smaller mufflers if you want it louder outside. In other words, you could do a 12276 reso, then 2 14445s as the mufflers.

Search the site for different Magnaflow setups, there are plenty. Also, I saw you mention you just want it to sound really good, and you wouldn't be upset if you didn't gain the most power. Try their "XL" mufflers in that case. They don't flow as well, but I haven't heard a TL with a chambered muffler...

I just got back from a well establish tuning shop that specialize in Honda , and they said that our engines need to breath as much as possible, so they will make me an in house Jpipe that would feet a 3in exhaust, with vibrant reso and mufflers.

Mufflers will be Part No: 1148
Reso will be Part No: 1142

I'm in canada, so parts are always more expensive, but it sould be around 1300$(With J -pipe). Pretty close to the ones from RV6 or XLR8

The only different thing my setup has from you, is the PCD and a 3.5inch short ram.

^^ Link to avatar. Now.

Your shop is correct. I'd keep going back there. Are you getting stainless steel piping? If so, that's a good price including everything. You are gonna want a LARGE resonator though with the PCDS & 3in exhaust. That's my exact setup and it's still loud with a 6x6x30in resonator.

@Sonnick,

Indeed it's in SS304, and they say that vibrant res are the most sound damper yet. I would hate to sound like a 4banger racer!!!!!!

You have the PCDs? If so, I'd hope you are using another resonator as well as the 1148. Or at least 2 of them. Your exhaust is gonna be LOUD with that setup. That resonator is extremely small (like 10in in length). Regardless of how densely they are packed, a 10in resonator doesn't have the size to deaden sound that much. I have a 30in Magnaflow and my exhaust is still loud! I'd advise you to get at LEAST 2 of them.

not trying to sound rude here, but any car needs to breathe. however on a NA setup sometimes a small amount of back pressure can make better results. so i would think instead of a 3in exhaust all the way, which is more suited for FI. go with a 3" ,resonator, 3" Y, down to 2-1/2, and finish with some mufflers that are internally reduced (borla is the trick btw).

You can usually get a custom setup done for around 1000+ in stanless, 700 in aluminized.

That's pretty close to what I'll do, I didn't mentionned it but it will be 2.5 after the Y, And still there not that much space under the car ever more with a 2in drop. For the Resonator, I found one custom made in CA, I'll show you a pic of the inside, it will do the job for 2 Res. There is small baffles that direct the air in the insulation for better sound damping.

vibrant resonators are by far the best. magnaflows are JUNK.

since you are doing a custom exhaust, i would do a dual exhaust with an xpipe and ditch the J in the J pipe and just make the rear pipe go straight back not curved. reason why it is curved is to "balance" the exhaust more when its merging and going out 1 pipe. if you do a dual exhaust, that is not necessary.

oh and btw, ditch your 3" piping. if you do dual i would do 2.25", if single 2.5" anything bigger is completely useless. we ONLY have a NA v6, not a v8 or even a FI v6. FI needs bigger piping, not NA motors

I'm still debating on the exhaust size, and finally I'll have an custom res with small baffles that direct air in the insulation with magnaflow mufflers, 'cause the VIB148 were too long and doesn't fit in the bumper, and we have not found any twin pipe small enough.....

Check link below for exhaust size, it comes from magnaflow.

^^ Quebec, nice - Jte fais signe lors de ma prochaine visite et on sfait un ptit meet

I see that you're lookin for a twin-pipe. Don't you think that a single pipe would look better for our BASE model bumpers? Maybe you could get a TypeS lip and and get more space for the Vibrant twinPipe. I'm also more of a Vibrant fan but I guess this is more of a personal choice ...

This thread is awesome so many ideas now. Thanks for the input guys! Now I got a better general idea of my exhaust setup...

The idea of going twin all the way is not an option as I already own my XLR8 J-pipe and I read that the X created by the Jpipe and before muffler helps the flow with a V6 NA engine.(correct me if im wrong)

If I would go turbo that would be another thing

I just installed my v3-pcd and the rasp is driving me nuts. I have stock mufflers and the dynomax resonator with the midmuffler delete. if i switch the dynomax with the vibrant resonator 1793, will that take care of the rasp?

I'm running no mufflers and two resonators. It sounds perfect if not a little quiet at times.

^ I would love a sound clip of your set up, also Im guessing you have PCD's. What resonators are you using?
