Exhaust Help on my 07 TL Type S
I recently bought a 2007 TL Type S 6MT. I've been into the Honda game for quite some time now, but I've never gotten into the J series motor (I'm a B series guy at heart, though I absolutely LOVE my type S).
So, the owner that I purchased the car from had deleted the factory mid muffler and factory resonator. The rest of the exhaust was left alone. I went ahead and purchased the RV6 PCDs and J-pipe. Though it is oddly somehow growing on me, the exhaust now has an extremely obnoxious rasp to it, especially on cold startup and especially around 3k-ish RPMs when shifting.
Now I'm not completely sure how I should tackle this. I definitely want a lot of sound out of my exhaust, I could just really do without the rasp. Again, I'm not familiar with J series at all. Do they need much back pressure to perform? Should I just weld a short(er) resonator in to get rid of the rasp? Should I go with larger diameter exhaust piping with a long(er) resonator? One thing I definitely, definitely, definitely want to keep are the factory exhaust tips. I absolutely love the look of the factory tips.

I'm well aware that resonators are not engine specific, but like I said in my original post, I want a lot of sound out of the exhaust, I could just do without the rasp. How long, or short, of a resonator would I need just to get rid of the rasp?
again, resonators are not engine specific, so the 2 quoted magnaflow resonators are the most popular for any car!! NOT just the TL!

Buy a 14" long resonator that has a 4" diameter.
This is should get you what you want but if it doesn't buy the 18" long one and so on and so on. The tough thing about narrowing in on an exhaust sound you like is that we all have different tastes and all exhaust setups sound a little different based on what mods you have. I'm personally on my third resonator and now have the sound I specifically want.

Regarding your question about back pressure in the TL-S - this engine runs at a RELATIVELY low compression, and shouldn't use obscenely large diameter exhaust piping in order to perform. Stock, the 07 and 08 TL-S have 2.25" diameter piping. Going up to a 2.5" piping is ideal (in my opinion) as it gives the motor just that bit more of breathing room that it needs to both gain a couple of hp and to crackle and pop depending on your mods. Anything larger than 2.5", however, will destroy your back pressure and cause some noticable power loss.
I removed the resonator and mid-muffler on mine along with adding an XLR8 v2 J-pipe. Sounded great at start-up, full throttle and it was quiet at cruising speed. However, part throttle in the 3000-4000 rpm range had some nasty rasp. I had an 18" Dynomax resonator added back and it totally eliminated the rasp and slightly quieted the exhaust at all other times. Since you have PCDs as well, you may need an additional resonator.
