Engine Damper?

It seems like there are alot of threads popping up about motor mounts latley. I've been reading that they pretty much eliminate the wheel hop at the cost of greater vibration. I had a dodge stealth TT once with solid mounts and you just couldn't think if you were sitting in traffic cause it was vibrating so much. So I offer an alternative...

http://www.prostreetonline.com/s/eng...que-damper.asp

What do you think about an engine damper? I don't know much about these and have never used one, but from the description it sounds like it could have a positive impact on reducing wheel hop and engine roll. Maybe this could be an alternative to replacing all the motor mounts?

Do you think it could help reduce the vibration for cars that already have the stiffer mounts?

I know these are popular in Buick Grand Nationals. Either that or a torque strap. I am not sure what they would do for a TL or even where you could put one...

newer TL's (at least in the Type S) have one on the rear of the engine. Think it's a good idea to get a stiffer one for sure.

Used to be popular. Now we use urethane on the driver's side (the side the torques up) and stock rubber on the passenger side.

Maybe something like that would be better on the TL. Urethane on the ones that count but not on all the mounts.

which would pretty much be the rear and sides huh? Didn't know rich was planning on making a torque damper also.

All the 3G MT's have 'em. Auto's don't.

Excelerate sells an Ingalls Stiffy. Spoon has an application, but for Honda, iirc.

Have not confirmed if the mounting points the MT's use are available on the auto yet.

Look here (Item #16):

How interesting! I have a MT. Shows how much I know. Is the stock one there to reduce engine vibration or does it keep the engine from rolling? Or both?

Hey I just went outside and sure enough it is there. Pull off the big cover over the intake manifold to let light in. A flashlight will help a bunch too. It is on the transmission side. It goes between the engine and the rear frame member. Just look past the heater hoses and there it is.

Someone should make one out of solid billet to replace the damper. You know. With a solid non-damper piece. That would definitley keep the engine from rolling and would probably have the same result as the stiffer motor mounts. What do you think about that?

That's interesting. It has been a while since I tinkered with a GN. I guess that shows, huh.

That's exactly what I am thinking for my 5AT. I think it will reduce engine roll, supplement the OE mounts and prolong their life.

I've also thought about fabbing a bracket to utilize the ingalls stiffy TD.

Not at all. There are still tons of them in use. Then you have people like my friend that used an ordinary ratchet strap that let go and put a dent in the hood. That was fun.

Does the AT have the same stock mounting bracket as the MT already available?

Same question for the lower mounting point.

I am not sure since I don't have a AT. In the diagram

http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...s=&view=normal
there is no reference to the damper. The real question is if the engine block is the same for the AT and MT? That's because I think the bracket is bolted to the block instead of the tranny. And the lower mounting point I am not sure of, but since it is a part of the frame I bet it is there even on the AT because car manufactures don't take the time to specify an AT frame apart from a MT frame. Maybe it isn't on the AT because the tranny is bigger and the damper couldn't be fitted in back there.

What do you think of my mad paint skills?

Mad skillz man.

I am sure a bracket/adapter can be made for the stiffy.

Accuratein has/had a bracket fabbed for a Spoon Torque damper that mounted between the strut tower and the block. Instead of the back lower side, like the MT, his TD was on the upper side of the engine near the passenger fire wall.

This is a kind of back-burner project/idea for me. I've been meaning to get a close look at mmade22's TD (he's MT) and then look at my AT to see if I have the mounting points or not. If the mounting points exist on the AT, then installing the OE MT damper would be a no brainer.

I think reducing Engine movement in either the MT or AT provides a small benefit. Whatever bit of power is wasted rocking the engine can now get to the drivetrain.

agree, Bearcat.
i had the dealer check my mounts knowing full well what they would say: "NORMAL. CUST HAS EXTENSIVE MODIFICATIONS TO VEHICLE"...
not to keen on what i've read about the Innovative Mounts - i like moderte comfort and my wheels dont hop.
so who's gonna peak behind their AT and solve the compatibility issue?

I'll try to take a pic of mine when I get home. That way those with the AT can know what to look for.

Sorry. I tried to get some pics of my stock damper but I couldn't really tell what I was looking at when I saw the pics.

But....What about this? http://www.ingallseng.com/93051-stif...accord-v6.html It is for the Accord, but do you think it would work on the TL? I would probably have to sacrifice an engine cover to the "stock" pile.

looks like a sport bike steering damper. I need this after the UR and RV6 upgrades. Did anyone determine if the 5AT has the fittings for the damper? Wonder if 04AccordCoupe has one on his?

well since I don't have a 5at I would suggest that someone that does to go jack up the car and check it out from the bottom. All you need to look for are the two bolt holes up top and the hole next to the engine mount. This pic illustrates where the holes should be marked 1,2,&3. Props to whoever this pic belongs to. I stole it from another thread. https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...ghlight=torque

It looks like the two up top are just below the cylinder head on the block.

Actually I just got to thinking. The lower hole is actually a mount welded to the lower aluminum subframe. Not the rear motor mount..uh mount.

I actually had a 5 cylinder accord and I had an ingalls in it.

Took it with me when my car was totaled.

Anyway, I installed it in my TL right above the passenger mount where it used to go on the accord. I had to shave the lower bracket some, but it fit. So I guess thats an option for people. I kinda like it cause I know I have my rear damper, my motor mounts, and a second damper.

Your sig says 6MT. Did you just remove the stock dampener and replace with your Ingalls?

This a pretty common mod now for both AT and MT TLs. XLR8 has these for sale. This is a nice mod for making the car feel more solid. My stock dampener was pretty much shot after 80k, much of it with the SC and some with the turbo.

Has anybody ever opened up one of those aftermarket engine dampers? I was told they are nothing but a rubber stopper inside. Not a hydraulic damper at all.

Ingall's describes theirs as "engine torque dampers are self-contained elastomeric shocks"

Not sure about NRG or the others but they're all likely the same.

Woops typo. I had an i4 accord.

Yea I have the stock damper still in the rear.

But now I have additional reinforcement that binds the passenger strut column to the motor. I'll post a pic soon.

That's what I've pictured above.

I think the idea is that the silver threaded adjuster compresses the squishy white bushing to provide adjustable damping. But the truth is, it just limits range of movement. If you limit the range of movement in one area of the engine, the opposite un-braced side will deflect instead. So instead of your engine rocking about it's intentional center-line, it will move about an axis somewhere between the the two.

Now I can imagine Honda used a hopefully-hydraulic damper on the MT because of the nature of the beast. The potential for MUCH hard shifts & launches coupled with the substantial increase in torque at the wheels due to gearing definitely could warrant such a modification.

Anyone know if the stock tl damper would fit on an accord 6-6 or how well it even works?
