Egr

I would assume this is the proper place to post this subject. Is it true that if you clean your EGR ports and valves that will do your MPG some good and even the performance of your vehicle.

The EGR valve works by recirculating a 5-10% of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. Intermixing the incoming air with recirculated exhaust gas in a specific amount dilutes the mix with inert gas which slows the combustion, and lowers peak engine temperatures, resulting in more power and less hesitation under load.

If it is open when it is not supposed to be open - it can act like one monster vacuum leak and the engine will idle really roughly, stall or hesitate. If it doesn't open when it is supposed to open you experience detonation since the combustion chamber temperature will be higher than normal resulting in lack of power and response.

since your car is an 04... cleaning the egr valve wouldn't hurt

EGR only works while your cruising..... it stays off at idle and under WOT.... its role is to lower combustion temps which skyrocket while ur crusing, because thats when your car runs lean the most, which results in higher temps...at cruise, ur ECU will adjust a lean a/f ratio for better fuel economy.

If EGR is on during idle, stumble and even stalling will likely result. If EGR is on during hard acceleration, low power (from reduced air/fuel volume) is the result. At part load, lean mixtures for economy create high combustion chamber temperatures and without EGR, these conditions not only create Nox, they also foster pre-ignition and pinking.

just figured id detail it a bit

keep it clean...

Is that a TL with the 370 WHP?

EGR is only for emissions. It lowers combustion temps to reduce NOx emissions.

To combat the associated power loss when egr is active there's usually a bump in timing whenever it's in use. This is why it's important to keep it functioning. The extra timing will cause detonation.

Just wanted to clarify that EGR is not for anything but for emissions but since the ECM is programmed to run with it, if it stops working there will be drivability issues.

Supercharged? Just wondering, you don't happen to own an Opel, do you?

so speaking about EGR port clelaning, is the procedure the same as on the 2G TL? I did it on my 2G before so I know it's not hard. From the looks of it, it's the same I just don't want any surprises.
