DUAL Exhaust VS SINGLE Exhaust

i am wondering about the difference between dual exhausts and single on the 3rd gen TL..like the

1. horsepower difference
2. torque difference
3. sound difference (im pretty sure dual is louder..)

thanks

1. I felt a little better low end pull w/ the single exit, and it weighs far less than a dual

2. You definitely gain some low end torque when combined w/ other parts such as precat deletes and jpipe

3. It is most certainly quieter in the cabin as the gasses are traveling faster and out of the passenger side, outside: its not overwhelmingly loud like say the greddy evo2... if your windows are down you can hear the scream while wide open, but cruising speed it is fairly inaudible

it seems like you are for the single exhaust -__- hehe.. yea but i did hear something like the single is better @ low end pull.. so does that mean dual is better at high end?

Depends what sort of muffler you use, singlexit with straight thru muffler yields same topend as dual

In theory, you want to have a higher flowing exhaust to achieve a higher exhaust velocity. In this given situation, where you are comparing two similar exhaust system (dual vs. single) in which the total cross-sectional area is pretty similar, the single exhaust will flow better.

In a single exhaust, there is less surface-friction for the exhaust pulses to drag against. I'm not an expert in this field, but I'll try to make it understandable the way I learned it (with image!). When you analyze the velocity inside an exhaust pipe, you have the constant velocity, and then you have the boundary layer. The boundary layer is the distance between the pipe wall (velocity 0) and constant velocity (inviscid region). From the velocity profile you can see as the flow deviates further away from the wall, there is less resistance on the exhaust gas, thus maximizing flow.

When adding a Y-pipe and a second pipe for the dual exhaust, you are increasing the boundary layer. Therefore you have less gas flowing at maximum velocity. Not to mention as Al said, one less canister saves you a few pounds.

But again, this is all theory, and the Y-Pipe and extension for the dual exhaust on the TL isn't too much added length realistically speaking.

Sound wise, there is more muffling area the gasses pass through in a dual exhaust system, making the dual exhaust a quieter system.
