I've never done a drop in; went straight to the CAI. I'll bet that in terms of horsepower gained per dollar spent, the CAI is much better than a drop in filter. The stock intake is an endless maze of plastic tubing.

There are MANY threads dealing with this. Bottom line: it's hard to go wrong with AEM, Injen, or Fujita. I like my AEM. These aren't terribly difficult to self-install.

I have done a lot of testing for Sport Z Magazine which is now called Nissan Sport Magazine on intakes exhausts, etc.
On the G35/350z, Long tube CAIs cause a loss in power due to a few things:
1) Lots of turbulence in a long tube CAI.
2) The ground can be very hot, and sometimes HOTTER than where the stock intake pulls the air from which is knee level~.
3) A box intake that pulls the air from around the headlight area and is SHORT is the best type of intake.
