DIY Clutch Compressor

So I got this super sweet XLR8 flywheel and clutch to put in, but I need a compressor. I know some have said to just tighten each pressure plate bolt 1/4 turn in a star pattern until snugged to required torque, but I didn't want to put the aluminum flywheel through all of that and screw up the threads. I went to honda and acura with money in hand to rent a compressor. But they didn't want to. In case you don't know what I'm talking about here is the tool...

It only costs about $255. Nobody has time for that. So I decided to build my own. Here is the parts list...
  • wood 2x6
  • 6 3/8" bolts
  • 12 3/8" nuts
  • 12 3/8" washers
  • 6x6 Deck post bracket
  • 2 M12x1.25 Bolts (about 2" long)
  • 4 nuts for the M12x1.25
  • 2 20" Threaded rods 1/2" Diameter
  • 6 nuts for the threaded rod
  • 4 1/2" washers
  • Some L bracket (like for shelves)
  • Some 1.5" screws

Tools needed...
  • Drill with 1/2" & 3/8" Bits
  • Skillsaw with a metal cutting and wood cutting discs
  • Ratchets and wrenches to put it together
  • Marker
  • Measuring Tape
  • Metal File
  • Safety glasses

Check out the pics. These should explain most of how to build it. Also remember that a 2x6 is actually 1.5" thick.

For locating the holes you need to make templates from the engine. I just took a piece of paper and rubbed it with my finger along the edge of the case and holes. This left creases on the paper and made a perfect template.

This all just makes the box. I used a bottle jack with a metal like plate and a roll of electric tape to actually do the compressing. I guess you could find some big washers to make the plate. And before you start cut an inch off of your alignment tool since it will make contact with the compressor.

I did end up having to wedge something between the frame and compressor where the to wood boards meet because it was pushing off the engine. But after I did that it worked perfectly.

Seated perfectly and torqued to requisite 19 lb.ft.

So much for the electric tape.

If you already have the tools including saw blades then overall this cost me about $40 to put together. F the man.

All done!

I like the effort, but the compressor you made is for the oem self adjusting pressure plate setup. Having installed many clutches on various cars this isn't needed for the run of the mill non self adjusting clutch, just the the clutch disc alignment tool, proper tightening sequence and following the instructions form manufacture of the clutch.

This is the gap when everything is stacked together. i had to compress it to get the pressure plate to the flywheel before I could torque the bolts. When i spoke with xlr8 about it they said it had to be compressed.
