Dealer says aftermarket pads are.....

So I was in the dealer recently and asked the parts guy about aftermarket brake pads and rotors.

He goes on to say.."yeah you can get aftermarket rotors but you should stick with Honda pads".

Does this statement have merit guys?

^ not necessarily, the stock pads are pretty good... doesn't matter what rotors....

now, if you talk price, the stock pads are the same price as ceramic pads... I would go with the ceramic pads

stay away from hawk hps, unless you want to squeek (see video bellow)

rotora and racingbrake both make rotors with pads design matched to the rotors

stillhere153: I was thinking about getting HPS pads from hawk and rotors from Racing brake. You think the HPS aren't worth it and they squeel? Does anyone else have experience with Hawk pads?

Nubie questions: What combo should I be looking at as I want to upgrade both the rotors and pads? Thanks fellas!

That statement has about as much merit as who it is coming from. It's the dealership. 99% of dealers think anything aftermarket is taboo. You can install aftermarket pads with stock rotors or aftermarket rotors with stock pads. As long as the quality is there you have nothing to worry about.

ROTORA, Hawk, EBC, etc all make great pads. The Hawk ceramic is a better compound for Honda's since the HPS are ferro-carbon (semi-metallic) and they can make some noise.

I recommend Racing Brake rotors as well. I'm not too sure about pads, but I'd get something ceramic.

I've got the same combo on my 2G TL-S and think they're great. No noise, reasonable (not zero) dust and they stop like crazy.

There are many, many posts on the HPS pads being noisy.

hps pads are noisy, and dust just as much as stockers

As josh pointed out they are semi metallic

Consensus Reached: Ceramic Pads FTW

you have an auto... so you will be getting 1 piece rotors

so there is really no difference in quality or performance between the following

racingbrake 1 piece slotted
stoptech 1 piece slotted
rotora 1 piece slotted

i can't comment on drilled or drilled slotted since i've never used them

I was under the impression ceramic doesn't has as much bite. ie you lose some braking ability but gain a cleaner less dusting brake pad.

stillhere... your video is worse than nails on a chalkboard. It made me laugh though because it sounded so annoying.

If you search for ROTORA you will find there are many many happy ROTORA customers. There are thousands of members on here with ROTORA rotors and pads. I chose ROTORA b/c of the high quality, extensive application list, and competitive price. You won't be disappointed.

This is exactly what my dealer suggested I do. has anyone else doen this...gonw with aftermarket rotors and stock pads?

I was wondering if everyone went with bigger calipers as well? Is it needed or just an added cost?

its over a grand to go bigger calipers
rotora was the main choice until a year ago when RB introduced rotors for TL-CL and some of us went to them
The main differance I can SEE is the curved inner cooling vanes of RB are supposed to be better. How much does that matter on a casually street car I cant say- but I like how they brake when I drive!

Either brand will serve you well- canada taxes are brutal- get a friend here~
for pricing of parts go to webistes www.heeltoeauto.com (see his ads in Sponsored Sales for discount coupon code for ziners)

Yes I know about shipping. Shipping with UPS is only good when it is US to US...when USto Canada...UPS is notorious here for egregious and mysterious "brokerage" fees when clearing customs, and also for slow or mishandled deliveries. Any Canadian will tell you about this.

So if any of our sponsors only ship with UPS to Canada...I will not be ordering from them...

I ordered the carbon fibre center/rear console from hondaacuraworld...and the total package was about $40-$50...but UPS charged me $90 extra just for "brokerage fees"...go figure! I'd rather FedEx or better yet...USPS

If you have your own broker you can avoid a lot of the fees UPS charges.

UPS costs less to ship but more on duties

Excuse me if I was missing something, but I was looking at the RB site and was wondering if the RB ET500's are ceramic or semi-metallic. I too am in need of brakes and rotors and came upon this thread. Also has anyone had any issues with the break in as descirbed on the RB site. Thanks.

I have cross drilled and slotted rotors with Hawk Ceramic Pads. I love them. Yes they squeak a bit but so does any cross drilled and slotted rotor. My friends porsce does the same and so does my friends Benz. They don't squeak after they warm up a bit. Get the ceramics.
