custom 3" magnaflow exhaust installed...pics and sound

First, I would like to thank stillhere153 for his recommendation on parts as well as I Hate Cars for his knowledge

This setup is exactly what i wanted and im still shocked at how it sounds when driving. 3" straight pipe from the jpipe back (deleted 3rd cat) into a straight through magnaflow resonator (in the same position as the stock resonator), into the Y, more 3" pipe going to straight through magnaflow mufflers with some polished tips.

There is no drone AT ALL when cruising at any speed. When accelerating in higher gears with low rpms, there is some drone but thats to be expected. I couldnt tell you how much hp/tq i gained but the car moves through the gears quicker and smoother. Enough talking, heres some pics followed by a sound clip.

no more third cat. the shop re-used the flange from the cat

straight pipe

resonator

45 degree bend

Y pipe

new bracket

3" muffler with 4.5" outlet tip

4.5" outlet polished tips

rear (yes i know those chips are nasty, aspec lip coming soon)

sound clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-rc5n5AHTk

ill make a few fly-by and in-car vids

What did you use for a mid muffler and how far forward was it installed? Is the cabin drone reasonable?

those tips look a little awkward, something to me doesn't look very good. I don't have sound at work but I am sure it sounds amazing.

... how many bends did you have to spare and I trust they used full SS also...
cuz if they didnt you will have to coat any parts that arent, nyc salt ftl

since you are getting the aspec rear you will have to head back to the muffler shop so they can raise your mufflers because the rear aspec actually raises the opening more

and yeah I am not big on the choice of tips either, that flare at the end makes them look akward... BUT, it is still one hell of a setup

T-TL ... or should I say TL-T

single 3" from the jpipe back. 2 mufflers, 1 one resonator, 3 180 degree bends, 1 Y pipe and 2 polished tips. all magnaflow parts. parts came to $530. $200 of that were the tips. install was $200. better pic of the tips

thanks. yup, all mandrel bends

no mid muffler just a resonator. the resonator is in the same place as the stock resonator. there is no drone when crusing at any speed. slight drone when accelerating in a higher gear at low rpms. for example, when accelerating at 55mph in 5th gear there is drone.

it looks like the used all 3 of them and the extra pipe for the straight areas. if they had an extra one then they kept it lol.

how many inches does the aspec rear raise the opening?

magnaflow is the way to go. a low deep rumble. plus a custom setup is cheaper

How much more hp would you get with the 3" over a 2.5"?

also you getting ready for a turbo with the 3" custom catback?

i think it would be less hp your using a 3" over a 2.5" NA bc of backpressure. maybe im wrong idk.

turbo FTW

To the OP, some different tips would look alot better IMO.

Wow.. your ride is quiet (in a good way).

The vids are good... and great for a cell phone.

I think the tips look alright. I see nothing unattractive with them. Don't know what the other peps are talking about. Follow your heart dude. If you like them, then the tips are great.

The turbo and a new HD camcorder... you the man! A well funded "the man"

With you being well funded, I am very much looking forward to your turbo install... and very much looking forward to the many videos of the installation process.... Videos Please

Would you mind sharing the part numbers of the magnaflow resonator and magnaflow muffler that you used? I plan to build a single exhaust and the components that you used sound good for my future single exhaust.

Did the muffler shop make the mandrel bends, or did you purchase the elbows as pre-formed mandrel bends? If purchased as pre-formed mandrel bends, do you mind sharing the brand name and vendor? Thanks

Damn is the exhaust sound that low? I sold my exhaust because people that were in my car always complained that it was annoying (gay, I know). Hopefully you get a better camera or something to actually know how loud the exhaust noise is in the cabin.

Great Exhaust though.

all the parts (2 mufflers, 1 resonator, 1 Y pipe, 3 180 degree bends, 2 polished tips) are all magnaflow parts. the mufflers and resonator are straight through stainless steel. i bought everything from summit racing. good prices and next day shipping. there is a 10% discount code online that you can use until january i think. just google it.

ill make some drive off and fly-by vids soon but there still gonna be with my cell phone for now. my camera takes videos too so ill try with that and see if they are better.

btw, no 3rd cat ='s smelly lol

There's no such thing as loss of power due to lack of backpressure...It does not exist!

just cause no one likes ur tips, doesn't mean they're "hating"
Most times ppl compliment others on things just to make them feel better. Liking something makes you expect others to like it as well, and if not, it's assumed as if they're jealous or "hating" lol
u shouldn't need anyone else's approval

now back on the subject....

I don't like the sound, but its all gonna change with turbo. But i like the work, and the route u took with "CUSTOM".
I doubt i'd use neither resonators nor mufflers you used...but the 3 inch catback to a 3"X2.5" Y split is perfect
and crying for "turbo"

in a nutshell...way to go with ur decision, perfect setup for the turbo. and best of luck, hope you enjoy it!

ps: notice how i included both, "the liking" and "the hating" lol, its called honesty without caring

regarding the backpressure...how come the car feels like it doesnt pull as hard in the lower rpms anymore but when it gets past 3.5k it feels like it pulls harder?

hating wasnt the right word. i know everyone loves quad tips around here so i wanted something different. im happy with it.

what kind of sound do you like? any sound clips of your setup? id be curious to here the difference. i wanted a resonator for drone. i drive a lot on the highway each day from long island to astoria and theres no way i could deal with that twice a day.

i dont know if you were referring to my setup but im 3" all the way back even after the Y

Can you post the actual part numbers of the resonator and mufflers? Can't really tell from those pics but are the mufflers angled as stock or straight?

It's been a while but I took a look at the magnaflow site and they don't make resonators. I used a muffler in the middle of my custom setup but wonder if a true resonator like an Aero that people rave about would produce less drone since they are designed for harmonic frequency cancellation.

id wait till u get the turbo installed...because ull be surprised at the exhaust change it will make...first, the exhaust is taking a diff route, 2nd the turbo acts like a muffler itself...so maybe ur better off waiting till then, and then take it from there, by adding the necessary resonators and whatnot

^^^ i remember OPEL telling me about backpressure and a 3" all the way for a NA engine will result in big gains in high end power but will not affect the low end.....you will not have any losses but there wont be any gains as well.....

since am not going the turbo route and I was thinking of exactly the same setup as the OP just no mufflers (will add em later if i dont like the sound or if i have some drone).....

i was thinking of precats/jpipe/exhaust (no 3rd cat so will extend the pipe all the way to jpipe rather than the 3rd cat).....the exhaust will have a magnaflow resonator, Y-pipe, 2 180 degree bends, 1 45 degree bend ??.....

the exhaust will be 2.5" from the jpipe to the tips.....

hey yeah post the magnaflow part #s I would post but I had to delete the pm's I sent you because my inbox was full...

they are offset on both ends and he used all prebent mandrel (u bends) from magnaflow... magnaflow y pipe....

opel: I understand the belief of turbo being good at killing exhaust note volume... but when the op hit me up about his plan I simply told him that if his ride was a daily driver... the resonator is needed just to daily drive until the turbo is on... it takes 5mins to delete the resonator
