Can't leave well enough alone. New BIG oil filter.

I'm currently running the Amsoil EaO20 filter for the S2000. It's bigger than the stock TL filter but still small. Since we have tons of room in the filter area, I got to searching for something bigger. Found the EaO36. Same threads, same o-ring diameter. Same OD as the bigger Eao20 filter and 4.72" long vs 3.39" for the 20.

Seems like a nice increase in filter area over stock and a few extra drops of oil capacity. For the same price, why not?

I don't think Hamp is all it's cracked up to be. For the same size, the Amsoil media will flow more and filter better. I don't think Hamp makes a filter of this size anyway. I believe Amsoil bought the rights from Donaldson filters when Donaldson outperformed their old filters. The original application is for a Pinto lol.

Does this change the oil pressure?

Hamp also sells mini oil filters that are supposed to raise the oil pressure for protection at higher revs. Assumption that larger would have the opposite results.

I guess it depends on where the oil pressure sensor is located. If it's before the filter, the smaller filter could raise it due to more restriction. This seems like really backwards thinking.

I can tell you for a fact that on my other car with an actual oil pressure guage and the sensor being after the filter as it should be, a bigger filter definately raised pressure by a few psi. It could be extreme because that particular car had nearly 100psi when cold but the point is the big filter definately did not lower pressure.

With the bigger filter and less restriction, there would be less chance of the bypass opening, especially when cold, and letting unfiltered oil through the motor. This filter also has the higher psi bypass valve like the S2000 filter. I realize our cars use very light oil and the filter probably isn't that big of a restriction but if you can get a bigger, better filter for the same price, why not?

I see your point, so I guess you'd also be running 5w30?

typically the oil pressure sensor is located just above the filter on the J motor, i can't see how a bigger filter would effect it though. i only see positive benefits.

Yes, only because I spent the summer going between Phoenix, Vegas, and Bakersfield with temps being over 100 consistantly with extended freeway driving. I'll be fine with the 5-30 in the winter but may go with 0-30 or even the factory 5-20.

the 5-20 is a scam to meet CAFE standards- the engine likes 30 just like it always has

I won't get into that debate because there's so many variables.

I definately come from the old school way of thinking but stay open to new ideas. My GN runs 20-50 dino oil. What I've been told is that in the old days thicker oil protected better because it was used as more of a "barrier" between parts. Thicker oil was harder to squeeze out from between two parts. With the newer oils, they're supposedly "more slippery" for lack of a better word with better additive packs, and no longer requre the viscosity.

My reason for going with the 30 weight is because with the slightly higher temps than most of the country, my hot viscosity was probably close to what people with the 20wt see in cooler climates and the startup cold weight is unchanged.

What I will say is that the valvetrain noise the car (and every TL) has had since day one went away with Amsoil 5-30 but not with M1 5-30. Does less noise mean less wear? Not sure but I will be a life long Amsoil customer.
