Just polling, how often do you change your cold air intake filter?

Depending on where you live, you might need to clean your filter every year; others may only need to clean it every 2 years. Now some customers opt to buy a 2nd filter so that they can put in the new filter and drive around and then clean the other.

Does anybody know what size the filter is? I went to one website and it has different sizes for the same cai. I have the aem but I don't remember there being different pipe sizes?

I believe AEM filter is a 3.5" filter and the Injen is a 3" or 3.25" filter if I remember correct. But that is just memory.

So far as cleaning....never. I just replace em twice a year. Crap...they are only like $30. I have thought about cleaning the old ones and selling em though as I know LOTS of people do practice this method of cleaning and reusing. I just replace with AEM dryflow units though.

I have enough of that filter cleaning on my dirt bike with the NoToil filter systems they use...hate doing it...and that one I can get away with tossing in a clothes washer with some special cleaner...still a pain and sticky on the re-oil process.

I will verify for you guys when I get home for lunch. I have both the AEM and Injen units sitting on my garage floor right now as I am running a custom setup that uses neither. Man...I should really put those things in the black market one of these days!

3G TL AEM and Injen Filter Replacement Part Numbers and Sizes

OK....at home looking at AEM and Injen unit now....

Actual measurements of pipe at filter end =3.25"

Injen Unit = 3.5" but tapers immediately after to about 3" (OEM filter # X-1015)

I happen to have both filters here...and some replacements I got....

AEM Replacement Filter Says 3.25" on it
Injen OEM Filter Says X-1015

Hope thats helps...about all I can think to pull off of em. There is a #21-2110DK on the box the AEM unit came out of as I also have one of those. OK...just found the other AEM filter I had laying around that came off when supercharged...so I have several now. The AEM's all say 3-1/4" on em....and the Injen says X-1015. I changed to dryflow filters after the original AEM one and have one each of those and they both say the same thing except the dry flow one is not red and is demarked as dryflow on the end....the OEM AEM unit and Injen unit that are oiled both are red in color. Hope that helps.

OK guys...bottom line #'s for you here....
Filter End Measurements Here...
AEM Unit = 3-1/4"
AEM Filter = Marked 3-1/4" (Dryflow unit will not be red and marked so end end)
Injen Unit = 3-1/2" (but then tapers immediately to about 3")
Injen Filter = Marked X-1015

Re-oil? I thought the dry flows were rinse, dry, and go. And if so, is that really that hard Mike?

And yeah, put those intakes in the BM...I'm sure someone would love a deal on an intake...I wouldn't be surprised if you could sell the filters, too.

hmm I thought the aem pipe was wider than injen? hence deeper noise + slightly more flow?

btw, I have an injen and just got a 3.5' fujitsu filter wich I'm going to replace the injen filter with...

Well...I think the AEM pipe IS wider as a whole...the Injen unit while having a wider opening...like IMMEDIATELY tapers WAY down...like right 1" or so after the beginning of the piping. Its like a small flange to mount the filter on and immediately tapers WAY down...no even a subtle taper...but bang!

So you are correct in thinking, I believe, that the AEM unit is larger in diameter as a whole than the Injen unit so far as about 85-90% of the tube anyway. I should do a full write up with comparison pics later since I have so both of em and filters and boxes to boot.

I was talking about the OEM red oiled units. Actually...I have never had a dryflow in long enough to have to change it yet. I am on my second one...but the first one just came off with the AEM unit when I installed the supercharger and it wasnt that old....and we fab'd a custom sized CAI - so we ordered a different filter for it (which in fact...was an AEM dryflow...but its yet a completely different size that matched the size tubes we used for the custom setup)

Yes....so you just rinse and dry those dryflows huh....pretty cool. Havent even looked into it yet. BUT...I know they were about giving away the old oiled ones when I called last time and they were about $8 cheaper ($20's) as they were trying to get rid of all of em! So if your budget minded...you might keep this in mind when price shopping!

Ok do you have to take off the inner wheel well to access the filter or can you do it from inside the engine bay? I am not looking forward to removing any body panels to access the intake, I might have to modify the stock intake if this is the case

Thanks

Yes...inner wheel well must be removed for filter access. Its very easy though....not the whole fender...just the inner plastic wheel well part.
