These are two I have found? From the looks of both sites, I can make mine for under $100.

Thought I would share, I can not afford $200 and up.

I think it's a great idea to make your own. I've always made my own mostly with sewer plumbing from Home Depot. $20 in materials and a $40 K&N. You can get fancy and use silicone couplers for intercooler piping for a few dollars more. Best place for high quality cheap silicone couplers and good clamps is a diesel supply store. I make my own intercooler for the GN and used top of the line constant torque clamps and tons of silicone for $100, about 3 times more than you would use for a CAI.

Here's a homemade intercooler setup. My car originally came non-intercooled and this was the setup I did for a grand total of $300 including the intercooler before I converted it to the later engine. This was a one day job and you can see the thick silicone hoses and constant torque clamps. The shiny pipes are the homemade stuff I did when I was 19 on the side of the road. A CAI would be even easier and cheaper and you can have as good or better quality than the big name manufacturers. I know these aren't of a TL but they illustrate just how easy it is to make your own stuff instead of paying ridiculous amounts of money for a few clamps, hose and a filter.

The turbo originally faced downward straight into the intake manifold where I welded the elbow facing the camera on.

A homemade CAI in 30 minutes' time on the other car....

I Hate cars, that is makin me GN sick. I miss working in that engine bay. Yeah, we made our own intercooler and piping also for our GN's. I met the President of TCI when I was 16 and they helped me build a 80 camaro with 383(10.8 NA) for little of nothin w/ 9" rear with ladders, the whole nine yards. anyway i guy worked there had a gn and was over the 700r4 and the 200's, it was not long after i rode in his car i bought one. Those are the best muscle cars(?) for the money to power ratio for money spent to HP. I miss working on those cars, one day I will get one. I am working on 91 LX w/ 306 NA goin mid 11's to upper 11's. The TL is my first non V-8 asides from GN. TL is Family car.

I want to see the Mustang when you get done. I really miss those cars, they remind me of my younger days. I could write a book on the races I've had back in the '90s against some nasty 5.0s. Good memories for sure.

Nice! I still get a chill seeing that car. It brings me back to lining up against them with anticipation never knowing what was under the hood. There were many fast ones around here but now I never see them. We had an all out war, me, my father, and a friend also with a TTA and GN vs the Mustang crowd. However, we all banded together when the imports rolled in.

of course you had to bring up mustangs, which makes me miss my fully modded 91 H/C/I/Powerdyne.

what a fun car to drive sideways!

That's the truth!

One of my friends had an intercooled ATI and H/C/I 331 and even from a 40mph roll in 3rd gear at low rpms without popping the clutch it was a tire smoker.

Surprisingly he had an SVO 2.3L very heavily modded that was just a hair quicker. Fastest 4 banger I've ever been in. Talk about weird looks when a loping 4 cylinder Mustang pulled up next to riced out Hondas beating them at their own game. If I remember right it dyno'd nearly 500 to the wheels but it was a light car, somewhere around 2,600lbs.

^ - Where did you happen to find an IC? All this tubing is great and will probably save me a ton of money but I need to know where to shop for an IC

It's from a Powerstroke diesel. Works great in the real world. I had overheating problems due to a lack of airflow to the radiator. This one is not as thick so it lets lots of air through the core but it's massive. I had to cut parts of the car to get it to fit. Brand new price was $200.

Many of the OEM diesel trucks offer great efficient intercoolers at a very low cost. However there's no chance of the fitting in the front end of a TL.

Piping is piping. You can make an intake out of almost anything. Just make sure you get a decent filter and you should be good.

Sorry to go off topic again, but have you looked at any of those ICs on ebay? I will be able to fabricate whatever mounts are necessary - but are there things that I should look for or avoid when buying an intercooler?

I guess it is easy to make it yourself and cheaper too if you have all the tools you need to do this. I for one wouldn't know where to begin haha show some pics when you make it
